Skin Dancing

With a fighter: never.

With a White/Blue Star: when you are crippled and want to ram.

Skin dancing rules suck.

Sadly at present only when your ships is crippled / or going to die and lost guns / iniaitive - then its a free and too easy ram.

I would hope in due corse it is revised to make it a) a useful action and b) not a free ram that is massively easier than anyone else.

yep, whenever i did use it i crashed into the hull, but i think with my die rolls i done more damage that way, sort of isa suicide squads,

My friend who plays Minbari has had success using skin dancing recently. He will buy atleast one Morshin carrier, collect the flights, then swarm any enemy ships threatening his flank using the skin dancing rule cause he knows there is nothing they can do unless they have precise or accurate in their fleet to shoot them down while skin dancing. Then just uses his fleet carrier roll to get back any that crashed, collects them together again and repeats. With a swarm of nials with 3AD mini beam each, even if only a few make it, they can do some good damage to the target.

Still seems like a better strategy would be to just shoot at the ship with all of the nials, and recover any taken out by flak.

The advantage though does stop weapon systems, even getting at you... and (lack of book here so memory may be off) but doesn't it also stop anti fighter? when you add that the extra damage from a crashing nail really helps to drop a ship out....

It's is a bit of a pain, but has it's advantages in the right situation.

OK time for some maths

When skin dancing, 2/3 of your attacking fighters will fail the roll. They cause 1AD DD attack. Against hull 5, 2/3 will cause no damage. So you've immediately lost 4/9 of your fighters to nothing. For simplicity lets say the 1AD DD is roughtly equal to the 3AD MB they would normally do.

When attacking normally, well it depends on the opponent. If they have high AF, you stand to lose up to 1/2 of their AF rating (assuming Nial, hull 4).

Generally, if the enemy's AF rating is less than the number of your attacking fighters, you're better off attacking normally. If it is greater or equal, you're better off skin dancing.

Of course that doesn't take into account how many will be around to attack, next turn... ;)

It was in 1e, but I did it with a White tar that got a little too close to the broadside of an EA Nova, so I maneuvered close and did a skin dancing maneuver. It worked, I hit him hard, and then was clear with APTE the next turn. :)

I had a Blue Star skindance a Drakh Light Raider.

Reason being was that I had lost init (like I did in almost every round that day) and the Light Raider moved after my Blue Star with comparable Speed and an Accurate Beam. But Skindancing him meant that he couldn't shoot me, so he died and I survived.

Having done some rolling, I wouldn't try to skindance as an alternative to ramming. The lack of the SAP and TD traits for the AD from the failed skindance means you do too little damage...

Ah bits very useful if you have no guns and/or about to be destroyed - had it done to me - the 10AD double damage (and inevitable crit) crippled my undamaged Liati.
