Size of Zistorwal

Andrew Farman posed a question about the size of the Clanking City recently, and after consulting with Zistor himself, we have a clearer answer to this perplexing question that has stumped the minds of even the most enlightened EWF mystics (such as Obduran the Flyer) and Mostali Calculists (such as Rockwell the Calculator)... (oh, and Andrew, I sent an email to your ntl address and it promptly ricocheted. It would seem ntl is protected by draconic magic of an especially potent kind...)

Looking at the map in 'The Clanking City' this is clearly a smallish city that, whilst built on an island, is nevertheless compact. It is surrounded by open land, but a lot of it is sand, making only the area occupied by the city itself stable for building (and its reached its surface limits in that regard). Judging by the detail given, the city is approximately 500 metres at its widest point, and 1,100 metres in length - so say 550,000 sqm. Its obviously heavily urbanised too, above ground, and therefore densely populated for its size. Estimate the population in the region of 5,000 to 8,000 people above ground, depending on influx (and pre-siege).

The city extends underground and is, perhaps, much larger than the surface area. Estimate about 10,000 inhabitants all told beneath ground level. There's obviously migration between the over and under city, but only for those beloved of the Zistorites to be accorded such privilege.

So, around 15,000 - 18,000 souls, beloved of Malkion, the Saints and Zistor.

Thank you for your reply!

Such is the infernal machinations of the lumbering chaotic god that is ntl. The blighted god of communication...

But, and I promise one final question...

If the city, is as you suggest is about 500m x 1100m, it seems at odds with the text (p. 32) when it describes 'The Respite' at its heart as "...stretching out for kilometres in each direction..."

....or is it some foul god-learner fiddling with reality and geography trickery.

I must say I really DO like the city as a setting, it is a very different area of glorantha. But reading the books descriptions of its slums and sprawling industrial areas, I saw the city as being somewhat larger thab the size you suggest.

But maybe it just don't matter all that much. If I want it to be larger city, I can in my players glorantha.

Thanks again for your help.

and after consulting with Zistor himself,

Great! Can you give us Zistor's phone number? What is the prefix of Jrustela? 1-800-GOD-LEARNER ? Oh, wait. Zistor is a high-tech deity. He does not use dial-up connections. Surely he uses Skype!!!

Seriously, , Joerg suggested on the other ML that Fritz Lang's Metropolis ia a good example of how the Clanking City could look like. I think he's right!

A mixture of trickery, propoganda, and misdirecton, so the great Lord Zistor informs me. Zistorwal extends downwards and outwards underground, of course; it would not do to let the hated dragonlickers and dwarf mumblers know too much that is accurate about the great, beating heart of Zistor.

Seriously, its one of those thngs that get included in the text but not translated to the map. The scale is judged using the definable details of the map, and guidance from a couple of Gloranthan luminaries. But, as you say, Your Glorantha May Vary, and if you want the Respite to extend kilometres, than that is how your Zistorwal should be. Don't feel confined!

Skype? A primitive form of communication at best! No, Zistor uses pure thought connection that relies on a curious implant buried deep in the skull. The headaches are a bind, but the sound is crystal clear.

I don't, personally, see it as being that... expressionistic. More a combinaton of Dicken's London coupled with New Crobuzon and a dash of the Lloyds Building in London thrown in for good measure. But that's a personal view. Metropols can work as good as any!

Greg and I talked about how Zistorwal looked when we were writing up the Middle Sea Empire and History of the Heortling Peoples (both of which contain pure raw background on the Second Age). Imagine huge mechanized versions of Tibetan prayer wheels, spinning and combining, their metal cylinders constantly clicking and whirling, making endless combinations of runes and symbols. Teams of monks record every combination and other monks chant the results. A gigantic, mechanized, Kabbalistic act of magical creation.
