Shows and Movies as resources for a Traveller setting:

Well maybe MWP will lose the licence. Frankly they are doing a crappy job with the licence they have. The core book had to wait until a 4th printing before it got an index or character sheet. My friend and I got the book an neither he nor I could find the Attribute used to fire a gun (Strength or Agility, it doesn't say) and we looked hard. The game is geared for new gamers but the system features an action point system (fate points, character points, whatever you want to call them) that lets you upgrade your dice. So, for example, you spend a point and go from a d8 to a d10 (meanwhile noob gamers are trying to figure out which is the d8 and which is the d10, let alone how does spending this point benefit them).

But the two biggest complaints I have about it are: 1) frankly, the book just doesn't inspire any games. Its rather flat. The chinese is cute, but gets ignored after determined to be way to cumbersome since players have to look up the words and then everyone else must look up those words to figure out what the player said (or rather, butchered). I was not able to find any inspiring plot hooks or anything else that made me say, "Yea I want to play this." (Also, the exactly same common complaint is made about their other big licence, BSG.) And 2) MWP didn't get a good initial licence. They got a licence that allowed them to release a core book, an adventure, and a GM screen. That's it. Yes they had problems with the studio concerning licencing, but frankly, why did they sign the licence if they could only release so little? Yea, they've got more coming next year, but the core book came out, what, 2 years ago? That's an eternity for a game to not be supported. The fans of the game are use to writing their own material now. Heck, House of the Harping Monkey pretty much said in a recent podcast do not buy serenity supplements and go with the world the gamers created.

So frankly, I hope MWP loses their licence.

EDIT: I corrected myself. I said it was the Sons of Kryos, I was wrong. It was the House of the Harping Monkey (RoleMonkey, specificly).

They don't have to loose the licence unless you want to base the game on Serenity alone, You would just pick up the FIREFLY licence,

;)

Doubtful. MWP have quite a lot of licence-getting, publishing and distributing power because of their reputation as fantasy novel best-sellers.

I hope they keep it. I think game's very good. There's a few warts here and there (some of the advantages cost a lot more than they're worth and using your XP to pay for doing cool stuff sucks and, like Sovereign Stone, it's very uneconomical with page real estate) but it's a very nice game.

So nice, in fact, that if the new Traveller disappoints, I might well use it to play Traveller with.

Well that is cool but it would be awesome to see it worked out in a true Traveller format with UWPs.

Like this? (Although it's adapted to multiple systems instead of one...)

Two films that have some interestng concepts to work inro a Traveller game.

1, Total Recall
2, Ghosts of Mars

On the topic of seperate Serenity and Firefly RPGs, it's at least feasible to have multiple games covering the same universe - recall Star Fleet Battles (itself a sublicencee of the original Trek technical manual) and the myriad of Trek RPGs.

not a movie, but you cannot mention Traveller without mentioning Asimov's Foundation books.

I mean, one of the chapters in the first book is titled Merchant Prince....

SFB is a very different case.

Desilu licensed Franz Joseph Designs when sublicence was implicit unless explicitly forbidden.
FJD sublicensed ADB
ADB sold the game to, then got the game back from Task Force

Licensing laws changed to exclude sublicenses unless explicitly allowed.

Desilu sold Trek to Paramount.

Paramount knew of the FJD license, but not of the sublicense.

Paramount licensed FASA.

Paramount sued ADB & TFG over SFB, not kowing it was licensed legitimately from FJD.

Paramount lost.

ADB was forcibly licensed direct from Paramount, without expiry save by violation, but with a ban on sublicenses.

So ADB is a whole world of difference. Their license exists due to technicalities of California laws.

Or Red Dwarf. Never forget Red Dwarf.
I second that! Red Dwarf is one of my favorite sci-fi shows, not to mention my girlfriend's (it's one of the shows that have brought her into sci-fi).

Other relevant TV shows:

Star Hunter
Andromeda

Relevant Computer Games:

System Shock 1+2
Starflight 1+2
Elite, Elite: Frontier, Frontier: First Encounters
Project NOMAD
Alien Legacy
StarCraft
X-Com 1+2
Star Control 2
Transcendence
Ark 22
Babylon 5: I've found her
Notrium
Morrowind (yea, yea, it's fantasy but it feels kinda like Traveller with the Empire, chartered companies, strange beasties, exotic flora/fauna and exotic local cultures).
