Shows and Movies as resources for a Traveller setting:

Bygoneyrs

Mongoose
Hello everyone,

I just wanted to point out some of the TV shows or Movies that I have used to mine for resources for ideas for my own Traveller campaign in the past, and would like to hear some others!

TV Shows:

- B5
- Earth II
- Space 1999
- Space Above and Beyond
- Battlestar Galatica (new and old shows)
- SG-1
- SGA
- Robotech
- Star Blazers
- Firefly

Movies:

- Terminator (all)
- Alien (all)
- Star Wars (all)
- Lost in Space
- Resident Evil (all)
- Doom
- Judge Dread
- Silent Running
- 2001
- Planet of the Apes

So here is a few that helped give my ideas, what about the rest of you?

I didn't really watch Firefly show all that much, for some reason I could not get into it. Now as of late I have watched Serenity on HBO a couple of times and it has good things to offer, but their systems of where in space they are located is kinda confusing. It is kinda like BSG (12) Colonies, needs to be better defined as to it's layout!

This kind of explains the worlds in Firefly/Serenity: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Firefly_planets_and_moons#Worlds_featured_in_Serenity

Movie: Outland --> shotguns in spaaaace....
Movie: Starship Troopers --> under-powered mercs (the book more clearly resembles Imperial Marines)

A very real feeling setting...Outland!!!

Well that is cool but it would be awesome to see it worked out in a true Traveller format with UWPs.

I don't think we'll see that. MWP designed their own house system, even named it the Cortex System (after the Firefly's name for the Internet/central computer system/whatever). BSG uses the cortex system and I am willing to bet that any other games they release will use said system.

The RPG includes a reall good overview. Too bad it's already locked in to Marget Weis' system.

She only has Serenity....NOT FIREFLY!!
(totally different studios, yeah baby :D )
Imagine how cool that would be

And she's licensed by the Studio for art, and Whedon for the setting...

Pretty much, the RPG covers both, since they are in fact the same setting...

No in fact they are not, not in a legal sense, they are both seperate entities, owned by diffirent groups, thats why she can't use anything not in the film (like images or characters etc from the TV series,),
non of the stuff from Firefly,

;)

let see, 1 film Vs 14 episodes TV series Hmmmm.....
And its the TV series fan base that allowed the film to be made
so if this was made for the fans just as much as the roleplayers (like Babylon 5 was) and was better made than the MWP game, (and that not to hard, and you could use the feed back from that book to see what the fans really want) I'm certain it would sell,

I think it would ROCK!

Sounds like you'd need plenty of low berths for the frozen watch lawyers. Something like that, I'm still working on the idea of 'Lawyer in a can.' It could be something for the Ship's Locker.

Some of the old wooden ship/ Hornblower or sub movies can provide inspiration.

My current game involves search and destroy on a tropical island where an ancient defense site just fired up, so my inspiration is more Indiana Jones or Predator.

No not at all,
in fact it's very simple, anything pre Serenity would fall under Firefly
but the studio would fill in the details of what you can and can't do/have etc,

And that would be alot more than Serenity,

Imagine the headline on the back of the book

"Hold on Travellers"

And that being a direct quote from the show, :)
How sweet would that be?
