Building A Tank Force For Your Interstellar Army | Tank Types, Naming Conventions & Doctrines
"Whenever in future wars the battle is fought, armored troops will play the decisive role." But what types of tanks should interstellar armies deploy? What characteristics should they prioritize? What doctrine should guide their actions and how should the tanks be named? In this episode of Incoming, the Templin Institute investigates the sci-fi tanks of the future.

1. Within the Traveller context, in the sense of lack of cannon fodder, you're going to need force multipliers, escorts and/or distractions from the troop transports.
2. Anti gravity is a given, and with a big enough engine, you can build them to carry as much armour, firepower, or acceleration, as desired, not limited by ground pressure.
3. Prayer doesn't hurt.
4. Ogres are like onions.
5. I like onions.
6. It doesn't follow that I like ogres.
7. Armament, keep it simple.
8. Endurance.
9. Main Battle Tank is an optimization of available mobility, firepower and protection; consider anti gravity tanks.
10. The forth part of the triad would have to be research and development, production cost, and operating cost.
11. Once you hit seventy tonnes, that's about it for ground crawlers.
12. Super tanks are unrealistic, without anti gravity.
13. Main Battle Tanks are either as light as possible heavy tanks, or as upgunned as possible medium tanks, the happy medium between those two.
14. Light tanks emphasize speed, cruiser tanks tend to have more firepower, and both typify a cavalier attitude; tank destroyers with light armour and a turret could be considered cruiser tanks.
15. Tank destroyers are very specialized vehicles, and would tend to a fixed forward arc; it's generally a question of resource usage, since a general purpose armoured fighting vehicle is a better option.
16. It's a question as what constitutes self propelled artillery, and their primary targets; this is too complex for a few simple sentences, as a meson sled is a pretty effective weapons system with it's own platform, and I've always thought that Book Four Mercenary generally got it right.
17. It's not that modern tanks resemble assault guns, it's more that their general purpose nature allows them to be effective in that role.
18. The difference between tank destroyers and assault guns with fixed forward arcs would be that one has a high velocity gun, and the other a howitzer.
19. Infantry Fighting Vehicles allows direct transport to and support on the battlefield.
20. In this case, doctrine is determined by available resources and terrain, because on the defensive, within your own borders, your objective would be to block the attack, and regain the initiative.
21. Reconnaissance in force is usually when you expect heavy resistance, and you want or need information, or just want to see how the enemy reacts; or it just may be a feint.
22.
23. Would hesitate to call an artillery based weapon system Boomerang.
