Real Guns of Fallout: Handmade Rifle (AK-47)

We’ve been comparing the guns of the Fallout series of post-apocalyptic video games to their real-world counterparts and today we’re going to examine the handmade rifle.

The Fallout universe is brutal and the Nuka-World DLC for Fallout 4 is even more ruthless. At the risk of spoiling the story for that one gamer out there who hasn’t yet completed it, there really aren’t any great choices to finish the Nuka-World main quest. But Nuka-World comes with one of my most favoritest guns in the game. The handmade rifle is ubiquitous in Nuka-World and is relatively powerful. The 7.62mm ammo is available widely in Nuka-World but is not found elsewhere in the game, except for sale by vendors. Like most guns in Fallout 4, the handmade rifle has a wide range of mods that can be applied. But what really makes this rifle shine are the two legendary rifles found in Nuka-World: The Splattercannon and The Problem Solver. Both are imbued with the Furious legendary effect, which increases the damage done with each consecutive hit on the same target. When this effect is combined with the Rifleman, Concentrated Fire, and Grim Reaper Sprint perks, it absolutely dismantles enemies.

Obviously, the Handmade rifle is modeled after the Kalashnikov series of fighting rifles in the real world. This is no great stretch, considering the original AK-47 was introduced at roughly the time that the Fallout universe timeline began diverging from our own history.

The Avtomat Kalashnikov, model of 1947 was designed by Senior Sergeant Mikhail T. Kalashnikov in 1947 after he was wounded while fighting Nazis in the Soviets’ Great Patriotic War and it was officially adopted by the Red Army in 1949. It was chambered in 7.62x39mm and featured a milled steel receiver. Ten years later, the AKM, or “modernized automatic Kalshnikov” was adopted. Along with other improvements, the AKM was made of a lighter, stamped steel receiver which was easier to manufacture and weighed substantially less. The AK is reasonably simple to operate, and it is easy to disassemble for maintenance so it is quick to clean in the field. It has a somewhat undeserved reputation for being unstoppable. While it is a generally reliable weapon, in real world conditions it is no more reliable than other modern rifles, such as the AR, FNC, or FAL. If you want to shoot a real full auto AK in the Phoenix area and you don’t have tens of thousands of caps to spend on one, you go to the Scottsdale Gun Club.

What is it like to shoot a real AK? Look, shooting stuff is fun. And AKs are some of the most fun guns to shoot in semi or full auto because there’s lots of stuff slapping around and a good deal of commotion without producing so much recoil as to be distracting. Practical factors aside, it’s just the right amount of noise and recoil to be a really fun experience. Practically speaking, though, the AKM does produce more recoil and muzzle rise than the AK74 or the AR15. It’s not so much as to be unusable. I was able to keep most of my rounds on the “bad guy” with short bursts. But shooting the same target at the same distance with a 5.56 or 5.45 rifle would mean more rounds on target in the same time.

Real Guns Of Fallout: Pipe Guns (ft. Royal Nonesuch)

In Fallout 4, various pipe guns are found scattered around the wasteland. It makes sense that the descendants of the survivors of a nuclear holocaust would have a lot of old, broken guns that have been refurbished and guns made entirely from scrounged parts. The pipe guns fit with the dingy, deteriorated, and discarded feel of the Fallout universe. If you’re not familiar with the game series, just picture Mad Max with a 50’s kind of Tomorrowland vibe and you’ll be pretty close. In that setting, the pipe guns feel right at home.

They are available in several calibers and, like other guns in the game, can be extensively modified, perhaps to an even greater extent than the other guns, given that they can be made into a pistol or rifle version and can also be converted to other calibers. There are automatic pistols, revolvers, sub machine guns, and even sniper rifles.

They look rough, and they are extremely common. Yet somehow, they remain relevant throughout most of the game because, as you unlock new perks, the customizations those perks allow make these pipe guns even more effective. Plus, they represent a good way to use up the ubiquitous .38 ammo found everywhere in the game. Although you might tend to use more powerful guns for the leveled-up humans, super mutants, robots, and other enemies, a lot of players like to keep something handy to dispatch the numerous rad roaches and mirelurk spawn without wasting better ammo.
It makes sense that a homemade pipe gun would be chambered in the low pressure and relatively common .45 Auto and .38 Special cartridges. But it is odd that the pipe revolver is chambered for the rimless .45 Auto by default and the automatic and semi auto pipe guns are chambered in .38 by default. .45 Auto is a rimless cartridge, which means the brass at the very base of the cartridge case does not extend past the wall of the case. The rim of a .38 Special would make feeding a challenging problem for self-loading guns. And revolvers are normally chambered for rimmed cartridges to make extraction easier.

The mystery involves jets of matter that supermassive black holes can launch off into space at nearly the speed of light. The galaxy M87 has a black hole at its center with just such a jet, one that extends for at least 5,000 light years.

Nearly two decades before the EHT’s iconic image, the Hubble Space Telescope captured another jaw-dropping picture of M87 that clearly showed this jet spearing its way across the cosmos.

Summary:
Could the universe be in a metastable, or false vacuum state? Could there be a looming vacuum catastrophe waiting to happen? Is the universe doomed?

This is related to the Higgs boson and the heaviest fundamental particle we know of, the top quark. All systems tend to minimize energy. Just as in the case of atoms forming molecules to lower overall energy of the system, particles also have a propensity to lower their potential energy.

A very simply potential energy diagram looks like a simple parabola. The Y axis is potential energy, and the X axis represents a parameter by which potential energy varies, such as position, energy, and field value. There's a minimum, or lowest point at 0 energy on the x-axis.

What if we had two minima, where one minimum was at a higher energy state than the other minimum. A physical system trying to minimize energy would always seek to fall into the lowest possible minimum. But the key is that in order to do this, it has to overcome the barrier.

This is the classical picture of how potential energy works. But the world is fundamentally quantum mechanical, not classical. The Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle tells us that in quantum mechanics the position and momentum of a particle is not something we can know exactly, no matter how hard we try. This means a quantum particle is not like a little ball. It’s wavy, its position and momentum is uncertain. Because we don’t exactly know the position and momentum, we can no longer be certain whether the particle will stay at the high minimum or overcome the barrier and drop to the lower minimum.

Because of this uncertainty the particle is no longer in a stable state, but a metastable state. Quantum tunneling could allow it to escape from the higher minimum to the lower minimum. Quantum tunneling is a feature of the probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics.

Our universe could also not be in its lowest possible minimum, meaning that it may also be metastable. We believe this because of the mass ratios of the Higgs boson and top quark. which theoretically puts the universe in a metastable state.

As the matter particles that make up our universe interact with the Higgs potential, they obtain mass and become massive. Without the Higgs there would be no massive fundamental particles. However, if the true Higgs potential is lower than where it is now, then it would change the mass of all fundamental particles, taking the universe from its current state to a completely different state.

For example, Electrons would not have any mass. And without massive electrons, atoms would not be stable. This is because electrons wouldn’t be able to stick to atoms, or more simplistically, be able to orbit them. The latest research shows that the Higgs potential may not currently be in its lowest minimum. It is metastable.

If you create a high enough energy event, you can, in theory, overcome the barrier, and universe collapses. Or the higgs potential could tunnel to the lower energy minimum.

If this were to happen, what would we see? Simulations show that the transition would happens initially locally in a small volume, nucleating a small bubble of the vacuum in space. The bubble would quickly reach the speed of light, any destroying everything in its way. The scary part is that we would not see it coming because it would be propagating at the speed of light, so any light from this nucleating region would reach us at the speed of light. In other words, we would be incinerated at the very moment we saw it. There would be no warning.

So why isn’t everyone panicking? Our physics could be wrong, and it will likely not happen for a long time. in a 2018 paper researchers calculated that the lifespan of our metastable universe is anywhere from 10^88 to 10^241 years. So that is many orders of magnitude longer than the current age of the universe.

Armoury: Assault Rifle

1. Currently, standard military side arm.

2. In the Traveller context, not exactly a toy, but a weapon lethal enough to kill an unarmoured, and presumably, unprepared, human, at a distance.

3. If you want to be taken seriously, you'd need to be equipped with an advanced combat rifle, with double the range and a faster rate of fire, plus lighter.

4. At best, considered a paramilitary weapon.

5. However, short range is fifty metres, which rests within a laser dot's fifty metre range.

6. Substitute a scope, and hundred metre penalty goes away, for standard upto two hundred, long four hundred, and extreme eight hundred.

7. If you get to keep the full automatic function, it does a rather mediocre factor of two; or is that three round burst, which most practitioners feel is more for the undisciplined shooter.

8. In theory, disable the automatic function, and maybe castrate the magazine, and it would legally qualify as a hunting rifle; your legalese is likely to vary.
