Starships: Engineering and Does the Universe have Higher Dimensions? Part 1
What do physicists mean when they talk about higher dimensional spaces, or space-times? How could we possibly not have noticed if space was not three-dimensional? In this first part, we will talk about the history of spaces with extra dimensions and how they became connected to dreams of unified theories, especially Kaluza-Klein theory, its achievements and its problems. Next week, we continue with the modern theories of additional dimensions of space.

1. The jump field could be a transition through one or more dimensions to a predicted point within range of it's predictor, time being one of those dimensions, or possibly just split in three or more or less aspects, like realspace.
2. Higher harmonics - it is a sound field.
3. Astronavigation - geometry on a galactic scale?
4. Charged particles - the missing element provided by the jump drive?
Which suddenly made me look up High Guard:
These are accumulators, sweeping up exotic particles captured by a canopy and removing the need to carry separate fuel for the jump drive. This charge is released in a single spike to power a jump drive; collectors cannot be used for normal ship operations.
The hydrogen is transformed into exotic, not charged, particles.
