SFU Query: Gunnery deck on the Federation battlecruiser

A friend and I were chatting, and the question of the gunnery deck on the battlecruiser came up. I hope I'm not misnaming it. In case I am, I'm referring to the thickening of the neck at its junction with the secondary hull. Two things about it struck me. First, I wondered what is there. I think it's the location for the Photon launchers, and I seem to recall mention of the drone racks being on the neck. Second, we wondered what relation it has to the gunnery deck on the Enterprise of the films: that is to say, which came first? I had a look about the internet, and saw that Star Fleet Battles was released in '79, the same year as TMP. My friend suggested that the gunnery deck on the battlecruiser could be a reference to that. I am a wee bit uncertain on that point, having heard that the rules on ships in SFU resembling those in Star Trek are quite strict. Anyway, in my ignorance, I thought I'd ask you knowledgeable folks. Thank you in advance.

The "gun deck" has 2 Attack Dice of whichever weapon system distinguishes one sub-type of Battlecruiser from another: 2 drone racks on the BCG, 2 photons on the BCJ, 2 Plasma-Fs on the BCF, and 2 Phasers-1 on the BCP (an "unbuilt variant" not yet in ACtA:SF). The Squadron Scale Ship Cards for each class in Federation Commander show the weapon boxes that translate into the "gun deck" AD when ported over.

As it turns out, Captain's Log #48 has a new battlecruiser variant for SFB, the Ranger-class BSC, which uses the "gun deck" to place a pair of special sensors.

The idea behind the BSC was that the ship could use its sensors to locate hidden Andromedan Rapid Transit nodes and attack them by itself, rather than waiting for a nearby survey ship to call it in. But by the time the variant was proposed in-universe (in Y197), Star Fleet had switched their shipyard production over to X-cruisers, and none of the BCs still in service could be spared until after the crisis had passed in any event. So, like the BCP, no ship of this sub-type entered service historically.

Of course, that need not stop anyone here from using the BSC, in the event that it is ever ported over into version 1.2 of ACtA:SF.
