I voted EA as i am using a 3rd age fleet currently in the beyond the abyss vassal tournament (but i have lost my first 2 games).

the reason i picked them is I just wanted to play with ships from the show - the omega, nova and hyperions

I have ships for EA 3rd age but could use some of the ships for an early years ea fleet, narn, centauri, minbari, lonaw, isa and shadows.

I want to thank everyone who has participated so far. I hope others will join in as it is interesting to see why people chose what they did.

I have to admit, I learned the game watching it being played at my LGS. As I leafed through SFOS I saw the Vree minis, and I thought my wife, an X-Files fan, would have a great time painting the saucers. As I got into the game I tried my hand at playing the ISA in an intro game with two other first timers. I helped another player take six White Stars against a pair of Omegas and killed two Omegas for the crippling of one of the white stars. I later scrificed the crippled white star for a shot at Omega number three, only to have my partner take it out.

I then played the EA in a game, surviving a two-on-one against my brothers in law who were playing the Minbari. I lost all but one ship, but met my victory conditions and won the game on points.

Since then I have played the Narn, the ISA, Abbai and the EA, winning all but two of the games, with one game called due to time. I was handily beaten by the Centauri while playing the Narn, and had the Centauri be the first to accomplish the mission objective while playing the EA. Needless to say, the Minbari player who tried out the Centauri is now firmly in that camp.

My gaming dollar is very limited, but I was thinking of slowly building a fleet, so I am trying to find a "good" one. But it is not just how good the stats are, or how many ships the list has, it is the character of the fleet, and you folks are really giving me the heads up on that.
Thanks.

EA Crusade and Third Age: Good mix of long (missles due to Apollo in Crusade the beams aren't bad) and short range weaponry. Lack of fighters isn't a problem. I love interceptors and they take a paint job well.

Drakh: Great beams and they're an "evil" race. The GEG is good. I like the Raiders but some of the ships under 1E stats are too quirky. Will be playing them more with 2E.

Dilgar: I like the look, I put a lot of time in painting them. I was using them only for demos but I'll use them a lot more with 2E, they've become more competitive.

ISA: Own a lot of models, have only played them a couple of times. I like their high tech traits. Better in 2E.

Vree: The Vree might become my favorite fleet with the changes in 2E. Very manuverable and solid mid to short range weaponry. The Vree will replace the EA and Narn as the most "straightforward" fleets, at least in games of Battle level or less. I've been using counters, that's not acceptable to me personally. I'll be picking up a fleet and I can tell they'll be a lot of fun to paint. Flying saucers are cool.

EDIT: During playtesting I've ended up playing a lot of other fleets than what's mentioned above. Out of those that I've played that I probably won't buy minis for the Gaim really stand out as being fun to play and very different and innovative in terms of abilities and tactics.

Earth Alliance : The Early Years

I've always been fond of the old AoG "Box Of Death" style for the Earth Alliance, so when SFoS split the Earth Fleet into eras, I naturally gravitated towards the time period where the most "boxes" were available. It probably really didn't hurt that the Artemis and Sagittarius were already pretty much the backbone of my fleet.

I voted Centauri, but have painted EA third age and shadows. Well to be honest the shadow fleet is half painted, and my octurian is assembled, but still sitting on my bench in all its shiny pewter glory.

I voted EA, but that's only because it's what I have been playing the most as of late.

Fleets I own -
ISA
EA
Centauri

Fleets I play
ISA
EA - 3rd Age
Brakiri
Pak
Centauri

I voted EA, I prefer Early Era with the Gunships, Sags and Artemis

I also have a fairly hefty Brakiri fleet but I have found them to lack punch in tournements, of course not having followed my own modus operandi in regards to dice may have had something to do with that! (A new set before each tourney, virgin dice  )

I have an FA Minbari fleet, not too large but big enough, I dont tend to use them very much tho as I keep finding Stealth to be an all or nothing affair.

I do have a moderate FA Dilgar fleet, i love the look and feel of the good looking ships and just love the MoD trait

I also have a proto Narn fleet and a proto Vree fleet both in FA scale

I haven't voted because I tend to cycle through my fleets rather than play ne in particular.

I have

Vree
Drakh
Vorlon
Minbari
Centauri
Narn
Brakiri
EA Crusade Era
Shadows
ISA

all the fleets are between 15-20 points at war level

I started with Centauri and just kept on going. I like Narn v EA and Narn v Centauri matches, I think they are possibly the bloodiest and most evenly matched in a staright up head to head.

My group tend t play large games, 5 points of war is a fairly small game for us. The standard 5 points of raid that seems so prevalent on the forums is little more than squadron in most of our games.

I like the minbari, the look and feel of the sharlins is as close to the feel of the show as one can get and more so than most of the other ships.

I bought the vorlons as my mate bought the shadows and I wanted a similar fleet to face him. I remain unsure about them and hope they have a better feel in version 2.

I like the centauri in their current versions, although i am looking forward to seeing how they are going to be changed, it's like getting a completely new fleet without having to spend anything.

My Vree have served me really well in the past, in one game against the dilgar, 11 points of war, I think I only lost 3 skirmish ships and wiped out my oponent. They have been butchered with the current fighter rules and remain in their box until v2.

the Drahk are cool, but take some mastering, something I haven't managed yet. But then they have only gone up against the massed beams of the centauri. (3 tertius in a squadron really hurts and makes geg somewhat redundant)

I am playing ISA at the moment in a large game against centauri, they are a challenge to use but when they work they really work well, hit hard hit fast and get the hell out of town seems to be the method to use.

Doesn't really matter what you use or why, it is still the best space combat table top game on the market and a huge amount of fun, lets hope it stays that way

 very true!

I tend to play Minbari (mainly because they had the best looking ships), but I also dabble with Narn (its back to the best lookign ships thing again), EA and aspects of the League. Mainly because each race plays differently (and you get all the fun of Mars Attacks with the Vree. "Ack. Ack-ack!").

have a league and centauri fleet atm but planning on humans, minbari, narn, vorlon, shadows and raiders in the future (far future ^^)
