Runequest Empires. Psyched

If this book turns out half as good as Im hoping (and with the author in question, I find it hard to believe it wont be awesome) I may well settle on MRQ as my default fantasy game

Initially such a book was scheduled for Conan RPG. I suppose it was converted into MRQ which isn't a bad thing.

Its not a conversion from Conan at all. Its been an intended RQ release for some time, and its content is firmly RQ in terms of its content and mechanics.

I'm glad some people are looking forward to it. It adds a whole new layer to running RQ games. If you're looking to actually play through things at a state/empire level, as an aside to your PC-focused campaign, its designed to do just that. For instance, you could use this book to play-out the EWF/Dara Happa clash from the latter part of the 'Dara Happa Stirs' campaign. You can also use the estate management rules for Dara Happan characters that gain land as a reward from aiding Karvanyar - its that sort of approach. Merging these two approaches with the standard PC campaign will give you a really rich, interesting approach to RQ.

Course, it'll work for Young Kingdoms and Hawkmoon too. The book uses examples from Glorantha, Elric and Rome to illustrate its points, and statistics for the EWF, Middle Sea Empire, Bright Empire and others are given so you can start playing off the bat. You could, for instance, pit the Bright Empire against the EWF to see who has the better dragons...

In fact... that's a cool idea for a campaign...

EXCEPT that the Young Kingdoms are a part of Michael Moorcocks Multiverse, and Glorantha is a closed world (the only character coming from an other world and going to yet another was Redbird... and Greg Stafford thinks that it was a BAD idea to do this.

I forgot something:

BUT it is a very nice thing to have... to compare strength, power etc.

Its like in old times when we were all kids: "Who would win a fight: Spiderman or Superman?" ;-)

People only do that as kids? Such debates are a staple of conversation in the Mongoose office!

As much as I like Spidey, Superman would kick his a** in a one on one fight.

Of course barring use of Kryptonite or somesuch.

I can think of half a dozen ways to get a bunch of know-it-all EWF mystics and drop 'em into the middle of the Bright Empire at its height. You wouldn't be breaking any sacred cows at all - and, more to the point, the culture shock would be heaps of fun.

Come on Andre - if I run an EWF Hunting and Waltzing Band visits Melnibone scenario at Tentacles, would you be up for it?

Which EWF dragons? I'd bet on Isgangdrang or Lord Great Burin over just about anything the Bright Empire could through against them. And Obduran... well you remember how frustrating it was to try and take action against a True Dragon....

Exactly... but what if Isgangdrang or Burin made a play for the Ruby Throne of Imrryr? What if you actually got a draconic mystic becoming emperor of the Dragon Lords? And how would the Lords of Chaos view these strange interlopers?

I can see stacks of fun in this as a one-off game. So I think my next Tentacles offering has just been decided upon...!

Well - it would certainly prove every doubt Obduran had about his students! Such a foolish entanglement in mundane concerns would no doubt be their downfall and doom.

Before or during the Elric saga? If its during, and before the sack of Imrryr, then you have a fully competent Yrkoon, complete with Mournblade to contend with.

Okay, okay. You got me. THAT way aroung i might be in. I had the other way around in my mind (Melniboneans coming to Glorantha? No way!). ;-)

The Black Blades could be a problem (if Isgangdrang or Burin ever got close - but that's not their style), although Yrkoon's sorcery is probably not enough to get those two to even notice him. And Obduran - well I am pretty sure he could ignore Mournblade.

Jeff and I are going to take this whole EWF/God Learner/Bright Empire idea, and throw-in some Granbretanian Beast Masks, and then see if we can make something work for Tentacles next year.

Working title is 'Masters of the Multiverse'. So, we'll see whether or not Stormbringer and Mournblade worry the likes of Obduran; and whether or not Baron Meliadus is more devious than emperor Ilotos...

Freeform.

We know we're both insane, but... what the hell.

Anyhow, having completely hijacked this thread (apologies for doing so), if there are any questions about RQ Empires, I'm happy to answer them (within reason).

Can you give an idea of what the stats for a domain might look like ?

Will this cover everything from a small duchy or fiefdom up to a big empire?

Strategic warfare ? (as opposed to hte more tactical mass combat in Legendary Heroes)

On that note.. any legendary abilities that influence your empire ?

Will this be detailed enough to play almost as a strategy game on its own, or is it purely supplemental to an RPG?

How is magic factored in ?

Tell us 3 cool things that'll be in the book

Cheers!
