Rumours about a new Conan movie

Found this on rottentomatoes. Take it with a grain of salt.

CONAN

Another franchise that got its start with Arnold Schwarzenegger, but is being recast as it is revived (and re-imagined) for the 21st century is Conan, which by all reports will strive in future films to be closer to the original tales by Robert E. Howard, and less like... whatever the Schwarzenegger movies were. Usually, the news I've heard about Conan, as it has gone through a very long road over the course of the last several years is who might play the Cimmerian in question. The news this week, however, is a bit more related to the actual reality of the movie being made, which is namely that Lionsgate has worked a deal with the WGA to proceed with script development during the strike, and that they are continuing to meet with directors, with the most recent one apparently being none other than Rob Zombie. Zombie definitely has a handle on visceral violence, which the Conan stories are thick with, but he has not yet shown a knack for movies that are of a larger scope than low budget horror slashers. Of course, directors like Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro have gone down nearly the exact same path, with great effect, so maybe Rob Zombie really can pull it off. If nothing else, he's certainly one of the coolest directors one can imagine for Conan. With word that the upcoming Age of Conan MMO, which this movie will undoubtedly be tied to, is ultra-violent and sex-filled (decaptiations and nudity being included), Lionsgate is probably looking to make a film that will be like the Saw of sword and sorcery movies. I have a feeling Rob Zombie would love doing just that.

Then there's also this one :

Our insider also exclusively informed IGN that, in addition to Gens and Zombie, the producers have met with British filmmaker Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers) about directing Conan. Marshall's next film is the post-apocalyptic thriller Doomsday for Rogue Pictures.

I loved the ballsy-ness (sp?) of Dog Soldiers. It's amazing what they were able to do with a budget of--what was it?--£5 6p.

To do a Conan movie right this time it will require a BIG BUDGET and a VERY GOOD SCREENPLAY! Good luck getting those!

Millennium Films has acquired the rights to make a new series of
films based on Robert E. Howard's mythical conqueror Conan the
Barbarian.

Paradox Entertainment president-CEO Fredrik Malmberg chose
Millennium after extricating the rights from Warner Bros. last
spring and putting them on the market with strict progress-to-
production provisions in mid-June.

Malmberg will produce with Millennium's Avi Lerner, Boaz Davidson,
Joe Gatta and George Furla. Millennium either will fully finance or
partner with a distributor, with discussions to begin this week.

The company's aim is to start production by next spring.

The franchise that launched the film career of Arnold Schwarzenegger
in its first big screen go-round.

Millennium is in production on the Al Pacino-Robert De Niro starrer
Righteous Kill and the Sylvester Stallone starrer John Rambo, but
the Conan movie will be the most ambitious project it has mounted.

The new version will be more faithful to Howard's original creation
than were the Schwarzenegger films.

On a side note...I hope the Score for the soundtrack is as awesome as Basil Poledouris' Conan the Barbarian.

I don't think any other movie has a score as impressive as that one.

It looks like Rob Zombie won't be directing the new film. Personally, my bowels turned to water when I saw rumors that he might. I haven't liked any of his movies and the thought of him mucking with Conan just made me ill. I'm can't find the particular article that stated he won't be involved but basically he is definitely directing another movie called Tyrannosaurus Rex and can't be committed to both projects.

I don't know who is going to be directing but after reading this article here anybody who does has got a long way to go to top Millius's work in my opinion. This is the same man that wrote Apocalypse Now and Dirty Harry and while his vision was counter to a lot of Howard's canon it still struck a resonant chord.

It would be great to see Poledouris do the soundtrack again since his score is one of the biggest reasons the original is so iconic in my opinion.

Hollywood's remakes have been more miss than hit and while I'm exited to see a new Conan movie I can't help but feel some trepidation as well. Hopefully the new movie will be just that, new, and not a "re-imagining" (what a preposterous term) of the original. There's so much good material in Howard's canon that I would hope they wouldn't mess with an existing story even if it's not identical to the creator's vision.

I'm afraid that will never happen since Poledouris has passed away a long time ago.

Exactly. I think that his score alone is what helped keep that movie bearable for die-hard Howard fans.

Let's hope the new Conan movie will be as successful as Conan the Barbarian was and is. 25+ years later and CTB is still selling copies - often for the price of a new release or more.

I'm hoping the new director is a fan of Howard and has a plan beyond the first movie. I suggested on Conan.com that it would make sense to follow the Star Wars format for Conan.

The first movie should be Chapter 4 , the second movie Chapter 5 and the third movie would be Chapter 6 when Conan becomes king by his own hand.

Then, after 3 very successful movies, the franchise can look back and start with Chapter 1 - a young Conan and the sack of Venarium (of course mentioned in the prior movies), then Chapter 2 (movie 5) Conan's thief career and finally finishing up with Chapter 3 - the pirate Conan. Of course -like Star Wars- the franchise would need a younger actor for Conan to start the second trilogy off.

Here's how I would break down the stories to fit this Chapter format:

Chapter 4

My 1st choice - "Red Nails"

Chapter 5

My 1st choice: "Beyond the Black River" (plus Conan kills King Nemedies)

Chapter 6

My 1st choice - “The Hour of the Dragon”

Then the second trilogy would look back:

Chapter 1

My 1st choice - "The Tower of the Elephant" (with the sack of Venarium impelling Conan to go south)

Chapter 2

My 1st choice - "Queen of the Black Coast"

Chapter 3

My 1st choice - ""The People of the Black Circle"

Would be sweet.
