RQ Slaine: Clarification of weapon naming

The General

Mongoose
First off, I would like to say that I love the Slaine setting for RQ... Prior to purchasing the book I have had no exposure to the Slaine world (but plenty of exposure to celtic mythology). It is pretty much exactly the world I wanted to run my campaigns in.

But on to my question...

p.54 describes the Poetic Naming spell which seems to mention "usual" weapon naming on page 24 where the "blurring of the boundaries between the magical and mundane" is discussed regarding weapons. I can't seem to find anywhere the restrictions and benefits of this semi-magical weapon naming, although p.54 suggests you get a +5% bonus when you just name your weapon.

Can anyone help me out with this?

Cheers,

welcome to the slaine boards :D
we have a thread of named weapons on this board to give ideas alot of the ones I have used have been from my own groups games  the naming rule makes a weapon special and personnal so naming you weapon is right a warrior has 8) but using magic inhances that so in my game is becoming more famous but if you lose that weapon enech and general reputation will count for nothing as you are laughed out of the round house and a named weapon become a double edged sword :? .a lady of easy ways  had a noble warrior just were she wanted him as his weapon was swordnapped hope that helps if I can help more on this or anything else please ask

Thanks Toothill Man, I have read the very entertaining weapon naming thread (and the even more entertaining taunts thread), which is one of the reasons I posted my query. Thanks for starting them off.

So what does a character have to do to be allowed to name his weapon? Win several contests single handedly or some other feat? Is there a special ritual to be undertaken?

From your post I see that there is a downside to a named weapon in that if it is taken from you you loose Enech! How much and what are the conditions?

What were the rules in the D20 version as they will most likely apply to the RQ one as well.

Cheers,

Gen.

Slanie had 'Brain-Biter' taken from him tiwce and given back to him in both novelisations, Slaine the The Exiler and Defiler.

By Skullswords and then given back to him by Slough Throt. I think it was the second time he had to snatch it back after destroying a small
Drune encampment. Bit of a spoiler there if you haven't read 'Slaine the Defiler'.

So acording ot this rule, then would Slaine's Axe 'Brain-Biter' have magical properties for that reason alone?

Seems strange as I though the weapon was always ordinary or perhaps bettter made than others. Taking note of the fact that it'sa gone from half bitted ( One handed.) to to double-bitted witha full moon shaped blade ( Two-handed.) in the Slaine comics.

Never eeally though it was magic, just extension of Slain's skill.

I haven't read thus far in the new rules.

slaine at time was a outcast so enech and honor free till he could buy his way back so loss of his weapon would be a practical problem not a blemish on his non-honor.

will give you the toots guide to naming your weapon as soon as I have the rules checked as I have done this for so many years my way may not be the book way and if there is a differance between RQ and old will do it twice or give my homebrew vs book

A friend has my D20 stuff for Slaine at the moment but from what I remember, its a case that you have to kill an enemy of at least equal Enech in single combat. If you do this,I believe that you may simply name your weapon accordingly and gain +1/5% on the weapons to hit chance.
(Only martial or exotic weapons could be named in D20, though I dont know how that works for MRQ Slaine.)
Seems fairly easy to do, but it has to be weighed up against the detrimental effects of losing or breaking the named weapon.
Loss of Enech and minuses upon all abilities for a period of time, I believe this is until a new weapon is blooded and named.
