Remote start a ship?

That'd work for me. :D

Works for me, too. But you can bet that the next time my players experience Pirates, they're gonna hear the same thing over the ship-comm! Pretty much defeats the purpose of anti-hijacking software.

Make sure they buy upgraded security on that voice analyzer. And even that won't work with a high TL setting.

[Quite true. If a human* crewman is injured they can still but function, but at a reduced capacity. If an automated unit is damaged or lose power then a critical function is lost to the ship. Humans have better redundancy factor. Also larger crew help absorb injuries during combat.
Knowledgable Humans* are the ultimate backup system. They may not be as fast, nor as accurate as a computer at a particular function, but they can do things that would costs trillions of credits to automate or make redundant.

They can repair damaged systems, work out jury rigs, act as a replacement for down systems, and many more things. They typically replace or repair more than one system, too. If the expert one on a given system is incapicitated, but is still able to think and communicate, instructions can be relayed to others on how to repair a system they may not even be knowledgable on.

OTOH, to play devil's advocate to my own reasoning, it does require a certain level of knowledge among a starship's crew. Let's hope that most starships don't hire their crews from the same employment ranks that fill out many fast food restaurants around here - because half those employees can't complete a cash transaction if their cash register is down.

*I'm using the term human in the same definition Cyphr did - any sentient bio organism, be it human, Vargr, Hiver or otherwise

That does bring up the reliance of fancy tools as a crutch during normal operations, which then become a liability during a crisis when it breaks.

In terms of starship hiring, there's probaly minimum job certifications for even the lowest crew positions (ie standard drills, emergency procedures). In GT:Free Traders there are certificates for various jobs, which a handled by Imperial agencies and various trade schools. In regards to automation I would say the qualifications require non-assist operation to pass.
