Reft Sector?

Mongoose
So the next Mongoose book detailing a sector will cover Reft.

I'm confused.

I'd never heard of it before so I went over to TravellerMap.com and saw it stands right smack on the middle of the upper claw of the great rift.

What is the point of releasing a product of a sector composed mostly of empty space? Or is Mongoose changing the nature or Reft Sector? Or is it about a different Reft Sector?

Well, it's not entirely empty space, it does sort of carry on in the direction of trailing from Spinward Marches and Trojan Reaches, and it might provide some opportunity for more frontier-style games like the blurb says.
The blurb said:
With a complete history and every subsector and planet covered, [...]
Going by the Atlas of the Imperium (which is similar to the Traveller Map version) that's still quite a lot of planets (I guess only mainworlds, as we're still awaiting news of a system generation book). I note there are three subsectors with only one planet, but will there be maps of the three empty subsectors? :P

However, generally speaking it does seem an odd choice, and two-thirds of it is the Third Imperium again. I'd prefer to go for something a bit further over, like, you know, Spica ...

Reft Sector includes the Islands Cluster, the setting of the campaign in
Classic Traveller's Trillion Credit Squadron, a potentially very interesting
region with a "feel" much different from most of the Third Imperium.

The Islands are covered in detail in Reft Sector. They are outside the Third Imperium and difficult to reach from there. Though also covers the worlds of Reft Sector that are within the Third Imperium.

Isn't the Islands Cluster only reachable with deep-space refueling operations? I think every system there is over 6 parsecs away from the Imperial regions.

There are some deep space refueling stations available.
