Question about marriages

Love-wife and Love-husband is this some kind of wedding engagement?
and will thislead to a real wedding?

I don't remember the details, but I suspect this is from the Issaries book Storm Tribe.

The Orlanthi aknowledge several (7?) different types of marriage arrangements. I don't think any of the marriage types has to lead to another type, but that is certainly an option if both parties and their clans agree.

Love-wife/husband is probably one of the less formal types of marriages, with little in the way of strict commitments.
My books are in storage after a recent move, but when I find them I could check unless someone else answers first.

There's a bunch of stuff about different kinds of marriages in King of Sartar, but I can't remember it all. I haven't been thinking much about Orlanthi culture for a while, so I'm quite rusty on it. I've been concentrating on Second Age Middle Sea Empire recently, and Orlanthi culture in Second Age Dragon Pass might be quite different to post-Dragonkill.

There are seven kinds of marriage among the Orlanthi in the 3rd age.

1, Husband and Wife - Equal status and rights. Children belong to his clan where the couple also live.

2, Husband and underwife - He has more property or status and has more say. As above otherwise.

3, Wife and underhusband - as 2, except the other way around. Children still belong to his clan though.

4, Wife and Esrolian husband - She has more status and property, and thus more say. They live with her clan and children belong to her.

5, Year-wife or year-husband - Temporary marriage, renewable afer a year. Children belong with their mother.

6, Bed-wife or bed-husbnd - No property changes hands other than that witnessed by others. The person not named raises the children.

7, Love-wife or love-husband - No property changes hands. This is a vow of monogamy for it's own sake or romantic love. Any children belong to the father.

It's more like a socially-recognized and endorsed "shacked up," I think. I don't think there's any expectation that any of the other forms of marriage will result.

That's how I see it too. The two clans recognise they are a couple, and while a firmer commitment isn't automatically expected it could certainly lead to one and may even be common.
For extra fun, different clans might have slightly different expectations. A PC hooks up with someone from a distant clan in a "love marriage" only to discover these people tend to see it more like an engagement than just living together.
The PC will start to catch on when members of the foreign clan smile and ask if they have set a date yet...

That would be a great story hook for the PC to get some special permission to not get married after being engaged.

This kind of marriage is probably more common in lower ranks where alliances and lands have little or no part to play in a marriage.
