Psi core warfleet

Do people think that Psi Core can field an effective combat (non-carrier) fleet. Can Shadow Omegas and Hunters win battles?

I'm planning on using them in a 10 pt battle campaign with only 2-3 points of motherships and fighter carriers. I'll be spending most of the allies points on Olympus' and Hyperions. Do you think I can win?

You can definitely win. I'd concentrate on Hunters rather than Shadow Omegas though. And don't forget the Shadowcloak.

Hunters Yes, they are fine ships, but do need some support.
Shadow Omegas, no, they suck huge hairy ones.

there is no reason you can't win, with any fleet, although alas, the Shadow Omega shouldn't even think of being in your fleet. (unless you can use it hyperspace, then it's not too bad)

The Hunter is a great ship as others have pointed out, as is the Mothership. The Carrier serves a purpose but once it has launched its fighters it can't really do an awful lot on the battlefield. The Shadowcloak is similar in that it's a good scout but as it's a Patrol PL vessel it won't have an awful lot else.

I disagree about the Shadow Omega, I think it's a decent ship just not brilliant, particularly in that it doesn't have great range. The Nemesis is just plain poor for its PL though.

If I were picking a fleet as per your instructions this is what I'd take:

1 x Shadow Omega
3 x Hunter
4 x Mothership
1 x Hyperion
2 x Fighter Carrier
4 x Olympus
2 x Assault Hyperion
4 x Shadowcloak

This gives you a good mix of ships with a focus on harder hitting ships at Raid and Battle PLs and more all-round ships at lower PLs.

given that you can use any ere EA - I would be tempted to use Avengers and Railgun Hyperions (nasty little Skirmish ships) - obviously no one was using these reserve ships and the Psi Corps borrowed them..........?

Would definitely take Rail Hyps over Assault Hyps I'd be tempted to take them over Olympus too for that matter. Rail Hyps are WONDERFUL ships.

Given that the OP was specifically trying to avoid a 'carrier fleet' though I'd say best to stay clear of the Avenger ;)

Currently my fleet looks like this:

Psi Core fleet
2 Motherships
1 Shadow Omega
4 Hunters
3 Fighter Carriers
2 Shadowcloaks

Allies (EA early years)
1 Hyperion Command Cruiser (+2 command, very good for a raid PL)
2 Hyperion Rail cruisers
4 Olympus Corvettes (or a mix of corvettes and gunships)

Based on models I actually have.
This is still a fighter heavy force. I'm tempted to drop the Motherships for another Hunter.

Anyone spot any weaknesses? I can see it lacks long ranged punch, but it has enough speed to get into range quick.

Nova's arent really worth it in a Psicorps fleet imho tbh, the Mothership is a better ship for your raid point and carries just as many fighters (and better fighters for that matter)

the nova and mothership are very similar. Mothership has a big long range beam, better fighters, better defences, all for a bit of speed.

And hull 4, and no rear weapons, and only 8AD TL in front and sides... in fact it is quite different!

And yet it's still filling essentially a similar ROLE of a ship of the line that works well as a sort of light carrier as well. I'd say it puts out the same kind of hurt to the enemy even though it does so in a slightly different way and it's lower hull score is more than compensated for by stealth and increased interceptors and antifighter. And Black Omegas are better than Auroras any day of the week. Whether theyre better than Thunderbolts is open to debat since T-Bolts are clearly better at attacking SHIPS but overall I'd take a Mothership over a nova pretty much every time.

Burger is quite correct though No.1 Bear, it's not that similar at all. It's BETTER.

The Mothership is more like a G'Quan - oh wait! It's better than that too, even before you factor in the fact that you get 2 for 1!!! ;)

well ok theres alot of difference. However i still stand by the point i made earlier. Its got better guns and longer range, better fighters etc. And who really cares that its got no rear guns. Its got a 30" beam, if they make it into your rear arc you did something wrong. Motherships should sit at the back launch fighter go all defensive and beam things. While the hunter does the speeding around to get the enemies flankers etc.

I was slightly wrong, i can accept that i am a man. (Not that anyone here is any less man or woman )

Da Boss delights in getting a Demos in my mothership's rear arc and ripping it to shreds.

Lack of speed is a big disadvantage. As is the Hull 4.

It is a very good ship, but it stands no chance once the enemy gets close.
