Pre-measuring and movement

The rules on pre-measuring say you are not allowed to pre-measure for movement. So how is movement meant to be done? You can't hold a tape measure to your ship and move it, because that would be pre-measuring.

The only way we could think of doing it, is by saying out loud "I move the Hood 3 inches forward, turn left and move 2 more inches"... then you measure it and move the ship (even if its not exactly where you wanted to place it). Is this how it is intended? If not, how is movement done without pre-measuring?

You can measure when you move - that is, when you have selected that ship for movement and comitted yourself to move it.

At the moment with ACTA, we think about and play with movement options before finalizing...

We have to select a ship to move first, and can't change afterwards. But then we use a marker to measure half speed, measure the turn and another marker to measure 2", another turn to get the enemy into required fire arc, etc. If we don't like the final position we go back and turn differently, measure 2" and place a marker, etc. When we find a position that we like, we actually move the mini. This is how the vast majority of players do it in my experience. If you do it differently then you are in the minority from what I've seen.

I assume this would qualify as pre-measuring, and therefore be disallowed in VAS. So when you move, you have to choose a ship then physically pick it up and move it half movement forward, then turn it, and move any more movement required. And there is no take-backs. Is this correct?

Takes me back to the days of chess at school, you had to move a pieve if you picked it up :P

You are right. No take-backs. A lot of the fine print on things like this will depend on your opponents, but in the Studio we tend to work along selecting a ship to move, and pretty much narrating it as we go. For example, "Bismarck's going to turn to bring guns to bear, then you move and turn. Job done. Any special move like Flank Speed you declare before you lay out the tape measure.
 
The idea is that you cannot pre-measure for advantage. Measuring to see if you can reach Point A or whether you have enough speed to get close to Ship B, for example, is against the spirit of the rules here. No need to be completely anal about it - it is just about avoiding advantage and putting the onus for eyeing ranges onto the player.
