Thing is carriers are inately inaccurate in ACtA as they are ships that launch fighters/bombers from long range and don't really get involved in combat..so really should be "off map" warships

It's always worth it to buy the poseidon box set, as it costs as much as it would to buy the starfuries seperately, and you get an awesoem ship model too.

In game it's a matter of opinion. I kinda like it, but I've not used one recently.

I tend to think of the Poseidon as a scenario-specific ship. If I'm running a normal fleet action scenario and want to assume an involvement of a Poseidon, I'll just include more fighters and let the carrier remain off of the table.

Now, I would generally deploy the Poseidon in a scenario where one is trapped and brought to battle by enemy warships.

As for actually using one in a normal engagement...well, I would probably drop it in favor of some direct-fire warships and a few extra wings of independent fighters. I love the rules a fleet carrier brings into play but the Poseidon is just worth too many victory points while being too easy to kill compared to equivalent ships of the line.

I've used it in a number of games and although a nice looking mini with beefed up fighter rules, the points may be better spent elsewhere depending on your opponent.

That said, it does have a commanding presence on the table and no one ever bothers targeting it.

Its lack of overtly offensive firepower does make it a less attractive target. I agree though that its role in game doesn't make sense if you read its fluff.

I think its worthwhile, but have yet to actually use one. So I'm sort of on the fence. We'll see what happens.

It needs more fighters to make any use.
Our house rules make fighters far more effective than they are now & it's still a easy VP.
Quick list what house rules
AF -2 dodge, haven't decided what will happen with e-mines as yet, need to play a few games with narn
Scramble SA doubles the amount of fighters
Fire in groups of 4 in firing phase with ships
Move in groups of 4 in fighter movement phase
No dogfight, just shoot at opposing fighters, the dogfight score is the modifier to dodge, not we use many races but all interceptor type fighters will get +1 if they have none.
Escorting fighters shoot automatically first at incoming fighters
All fighters get precise
d3 locatin crit chart then d6 ( we have slightly different crit chart)
Double the speed.
If it's says carrier in title or trait we say that gets them back 4+, they don't dissapear unless the max amount of fighters goes down eg
5 pt raid EA early era
1 Avenger 8
1 Nova 4
1 Hyperion 1
1 Sag 0
1 Olympus 0
1 Oracle 0
3 Hermes 3
gives a total 16 fighters but lose the hyperion max becomes 15, lose nova goes to 11, lose the avenger lose the abilty to regenerate.
Fleet carrier makes the roll go to 3+
This means if you have purchased wings as well the first fighters to die don't come back, it's about how fighters your ships can have.
Even with these the Poseidon still isn't quite there just more fighters might make it.
But then i do target it cause the fighters will wear down my Cent eventually but i do take Balvarians & Balvarix to counter EA fighter supremency.
So with all these mods carriers have a role in our fleets, no VP's for fighters from caps

Yes and No. At least from my point of view. I have never actually used or faced one in a game. It is a really nice (and huge) and impressive model, and as has been noted comes free with a large bunch of starfuries.

Outwardly I would consider it a big fat target, with minimal weapons (the main weapons are the fighters that it carries and they need to be dealt with seperately). However it has a lot of damage and crew to soak up the hits with. And as a result, while easy to hit you need to do a lot of damage to cripple, skeleton crew or destroy it. And that firepower might be better spent elswhere by your opponent.

What it brings to the battlefield is Command +3 (a bonus to your fleets initiative) and fleet carrier (gives a bonus to your dogfight rolls and allows recovery by fighters). Both of which are very useful to an EA fleet.

With a War PL ship, it will probably only be fielded it in the higher level games.

Well, I dont know about it's stats, but I put one of the pewters together for my EA friend. It was a total pain in the rear. Definitely one of those CTA models that just need to be recast. I mean, the picture on the box, if you look at it close, has gaps. It took alot of putty, grinding, and copper tubing to make it look decent.
I dont know if any of you play WarHammer, but it was worse than putting an Empire Steam Tank together.

Model wise, I love the look of it, and the box is a nice deal.

In any case you're going to use it in the game, you're essentially getting half the number of fighters you could have if you bought wings, in exchange for a fleet carrier trait and a big target with 'kick me' on the side.
(given it's based off a Nova/Omega-type chassis why is it hull 4? Especially given that the Avenger is hull 5...)

In a big one-off battle I'd still be suspicious of it. To be fair it pretty much covers the board with a 30" bubble, so it's not bad. A good trick if you want a fighter heavy fleet might be to take one fleet carrier and a load of independant wings.
In a campaign, of course, a fleet carrier's maintenance facilities make it much nicer, as well as it being the best command ship you can have...

In a campaign or a campaign-sized fleet I'd probably take one as it feels right having something like that leading a fleet.

If I saw a Poseidon on the table, and I had a Kaliva or other long range sniper (Omega CC, Sharlin, Vorlon HC etc.), it'd be a prime target. An easy set of VPs to snipe off in most any scenario.

But, that assumes that the player puts it out where you can shoot it, and doesn't give you other things to worry about (which I doubt they would). I'd use it like I do Morshins - keep them at the back behind terrain, or out on the flanks whilst the big guns draw the fire.

Like the Morshin it does have a use - it is a great carrier, and the offensive power of 16 Thunderbolts is nothing to sniff at. Seeing a swarm of 8 or more 2+ dodge attack fighters coming towards you will make most people (except Narn of course) play into your hands somehow.

I MIGHT consider using one in a War or Armageddon level game but really Im gonna have to say no overall. I've tried using one on several occassions and every time, its been killed off in short order, its fighters have had minimal effect (though they did of course sweep the enemy fighters away very quickly, I'm afraid that fighters are still nowhere near effective enough against larger targets to justify spending a whole War point on them (which is in effect what you are doing).

The command bonus is nice but again not worth a whole war point. Given the alternative now of the Command Omega having a decent stat line, or two omegas or two Marathons, I just cant see myself ever fielding one and not wishing Id gone with a different option.

All that said, it IS a lovlely model and the box set is definitely worth it if you want some starfuries as pricewise you essentially get the carrier for free!

I usually use my Poseidon to show off to newbies who are observing the game, the new comers are always infactuated by the hulking great big model that seems to spit out loads of fighters. Other than tempt new people to the game it has not really served any other purpose.

Ideally i'd like to see the thing changed. As I recall the redundancy rule that appeared on these boards helped make it a little more useful. Until more scenarios come out Or i find some other use for it, it seems like i wont be brushing the dust off it for years to come.

As for possible improvements i've been working with a few fellow players to see what extra we can add to it. Obviously these are only ideas at the moment but obviously any extra would be nice. So (after applying burn cream in advance because even i would flame some of these!);

1. Increase to Hull 5
2. Give it redundancy against criticals
3. Up the fighter load to 18, 20, 24 or 32 *yeah right *
4. Create 'Advanced Fleet Carrier' which allows recovery on 4+ at 18inches
5. Increase weapons load.
6. (I like this one) Give it three different auxillary craft values. Eg 16 Fighter flights, 8 breaching pods and 6 optional slots for shuttles etc. Or allow exchange of fighters for escorts/ make akin to Drakh mothership.
7. Give it more interceptors and space-station esque interceptor grid.
8. Allow poseidon to deploy its fighters but be "off table" (VP issues?)
9.Make destroying or capturing one additional scenarios; find more uses!
9. Increase Command bonus to +4 (fluff/game issues)
10. Increase stats to make armageddon or rearange so that its Battle and Avenger remains at Raid.

I do think the posiedon needs hull 5.
i have used a posiedon once and that was against my friends minbari, although i lost the game the posiedon did survive. :o

as for the posiedon if it became armageddon i would be happy but only if the warlock dropped to war ea should not have 3 armageddon level ships.
plus if it does go to the arma level it needs a higher hull, more guns and possibly a few more fighters and as code of arms says +4 command.

Ive used the poseidon a couple of times, with mixed success. I fought a 5 pt war against a shadow player and he focused on destroying it right away with 2 hunters. In that game it was kinda nice, cause he left my marathons alone, but he figured out right away that it was a mistake and he wouldnt do it again. Overall i would be happy with a little bit better hull, and a few more fighters might be nice, imo.
