Point Defense Modifiers

Do all of these modifiers apply when making a point Defense roll?

Fire control software
Beam laser bonus or Pulse laser bonus
Gunner skill
Dex DM

My assumption has been yes but we have encountered some staggering successes in our group...

For example, a player rolled a 10, added 4 for beam laser, 3 for fire control, 3 for skill, 1 for Dex dm, 2 for triple turret for a total result of 23. Needing an 8 or higher to succeed yielded a total destroyed of 15 missiles from one beam laser turret! Even if he had rolled a 3, 8 missiles still would have been destroyed. Is this all correct or am I missing something / doing something wrong?
 
From what I can see... Nope everything you've noted is correct. He's a Missile swatter of the nth degree. Very strong on the defensive.

The only thing I can (evilly) suggest is either 2 ships or craft firing missiles (thus 2 salvos incoming at the same time if they do it right) OR a Torp AND missile launched at them (as Torps and Missiles are treated as different things two salvos rather than just one).... MGT 1e rule about resilient which ignores the first hit on it but in 2e its a -1 for the criticals on the weapon system.... I might (house rule) that the 1e version stands for missiles or torps..ignoring the first hit...thus it would cut his ability in half (removes 11 missiles rather than 23 4 rather than 8).

But that's hard / unfair to implement post-fact....

I believe not. The Point defence action is not an Attack, hence Fire Control and laser bonus do not apply. Compare with the Capital system.

PD = 2D + Gunnery skill + DexDM + triple turret bonus

With the right gunner you can still get some spectacular results.

Ok, thanks... makes sense. We all thought if we were doing it right, missiles were useless. Even so, that means he still destroyed 8 missiles with that result...
 
Good gunner, he will destroy an average of 5 missiles every round.

You can swamp his PD with several salvoes arriving at the same time, or using multi-warhead missiles.

By making use of the different run times of slow and fast missiles and timing it right you can make two salvoes launched in different rounds arrive simultaneously. One gunner can only PD against one salvo.

Missiles are far from useless.

Very good points from your posts. You've seen and comprehended the situation better than I (and now my game will be the better for it...).

Although missiles cost, a weapon used in point defense can't be used for attack during the same round. In some circumstances and correct timing, this means less firepower against your ship.
