yes it works for battletech but battletech doesnt have boresights.

how about this for an alternative:
the bigger the ship the slower it is to react, initiativewise it would work as follows - you move ships in order of priority level with the highest PL ships moving 1st but you have a choice of which ones to move when of the same PL. this means the big ships are lumbering around on both sides whilst the smaller quicker ships get to react to the moves.

So big ships with boresights are screwed?

not really if you have plenty of big ships, plus dont forget your opponent will have big ships also for you to boresight cos he has to move them as well even if overall he outnumbers you with small ships. and dont forget, if he did outnumber you with small ships your boresight would never get a decent target anyway, this way he could.

Sorry but this is the 2nd worst idea ever, 2nd only to your opponent choosing which ship you should move.

How many battles do you have more than one big ship? G'Quan, Marathon, Nemesis, Warlock, Victory, Fireraptor, Stormfalcon, Command Omega, Bin'Tak, G'Vrahn, Ka'Bin'Tak, Omega and Raiders Nova would become totally useless ships in Raid or below. You're unlikely to have more than 1, so if you lose initiative, you don't get to shoot its main weapon at anything. At least currently, you get to shoot a small ship and destroy one of his init sinks.

yes but win init and you get to line up on one of your opponents biggest ships which under current rules if your opponent outnumbers you you wont get to do.

How many of the races with boresighted weapons have a good initiative bonus?

Drazi 1, or 0 if combined league
EA 0/1/2 depending on era
Narn 2

vs:

Centauri 3
Vorlons 4
Shadows 6
Minbari 4
Drakh 4
ISA 2

HEY! Don't include the Drazi amongst all these plodding old cows, 2/45 will always find you a target.

Not if none of the enemy have moved yet. If you lose init and must move your Fireraptor first, ino amount of turns are gonna find it a target.

Drazi 2, if attacking, I thank you.

And what good Drazi isn't?
One that is defending? Or do they all just give up their strategic targets if someone else wants them?
Or one that is in a tourney.

Basic Drazi philosophy, as proven by their ship design - always have an enemy in front of you.

Isn't attacking/defending defined by the scenario, irrespective of whose strategic target it is?

Nope. Whoever is attacking the strategic target, is the "attacker" if the scenario calls for one.
