OTU Setting Name

Typically 1100-1120 has been called "The Golden Age" of the Third Imperium and was the default setting of Classic Traveller (the original Little Black Books [LBB]).

993 would be the Solomani Rim War.

That could work too.

Just plain Imperium (or maybe capitalized: IMPERIUM) would be good and have a bit of the "minimalist" style to it. WH40K be damned. And leaving out the "3" means it could apply to any of the Imperia* of the TU.

I don't like Charted Space since Traveller, with the world-building system and all, is such a great game for having adventures in uncharted space.

10.000 Stars, perhaps?

*Sorry, couldn't resist.

Apart from Imperium screaming 40K to me, It is also a little bland. It could be any sci-fi empire (and there are lots).

Something iconic is what we need. Anybody have anything Iconic other than the Irridium Throne? I can see plenty of Iconic images (the starburst, the Imperial Marines in maroon armour, type s scouts, Hivers, K'Kree) but few Iconic titles for the whole empire.

The Golden Age of the Third Imperium (1050-1115)
The Shattering of the Third Imperium (1115-1135)

The use of the "Third Imperium" sets it clearly apart from WH40K's imperium

or

Encyclopedia of the Third Imperium

Is the core setting going to really focus on the whole of the Third Imperium and its 1130 year history?

Because if that is just the backdrop and instead you focus on the sectors then I'd just go with "Spinward Marches", "Solomani Rim" etc

Or how about:

Library Data: Third Imperium - the golden age

Have each setting from the viewpoint of an observer from the far, far, far future and that allows you to have each setting book using the same title format:

Library Data: Rule of Man

Library Data: Solomani Rimward Exploration

Library Data: Third Imperium - the Jullian Wars

etc

From the perspective of an old Traveller grognard, 'Charted Space' is the best, most inclusive and recognisable term. Unfortunately, I think it would be too bland to attract new players - not to mention being a little too similar to Larry Niven's 'Known Space'.

I do like 'Iridium Throne' - it's iconic, and also immediately conveys the "Age of Sail in Space" feel of Classic Traveller - this is science fiction that has Emperors and nobles.

Most of the other suggestions I think have been too specific - "Imperium" or "Third Imperium" would be like using "Jrustela" rather than "Glorantha" as the name of the setting for RQ...

I played Traveller back in the day and stopped around the time Mega-Traveller came out. Charted Space doesn't ring any bells with me. Third Imperium, Solomani Rim and Spinward Marches do, but as setting names go they aren't quite evocative of the whole milieu. The single most evocative name I can think of is Free Trader Beowolf.

A couple of other thoughts: Far Trader; Scouts, Marines & Traders; Jump-6.

Maybe the setting should be named Traveller and the rules should be given a new name.

It's kinda ironic. Most Traveller fans can't agree on how to defined the game itself, and they now they can't even figure out what to call the damn thing...

You know what, Mongoose - just pick a name for yourself that you think is appropriate. If there's anything about Traveller's history that you ought to be aware of, it's that the fans are the last people you should be asking for opinions on things because they vary so widely that you basically end up just as confused as you were to start with ;).

You might just be on to something - and your "Jump-6" could be an awesome system name, particularly if it's d6 based as was original Traveller...

...Currently I'm gravitating towards 'Third Imperium' (I'm aware that that's not strictly accurate) but I'm open to suggestions.

What do you lot think?

Well, I still like my earlier 'Grand Empire of Stars' best. I would look at 'Charted Space' favorably as a close second.

Or perhaps 'Charted Space of the Grand Empire of Stars' ;) It's a big book right

...but I wonder if maybe you'd prefer something as simple as 'Imperium'. One word (are single word titles still catchy?), not tied to any specific era (like Third), recognizable to old Travellers and perhaps evocative enough to new Travellers. Only problem is it doesn't scream 'Space Game' and jump from the shelf to mug browsers in the store. But then that's what the cover art is for, right.

Big problem with just plain "Imperium" is that it could be confused with Warhammer 40K, especially in my part of the world.

Grand Empire of Stars is quite good. But, for me, is a little vague and unevocative. Pity "Ziru Sirka" is so First Imperium.

*cough*iridium throne*cough* :)

An Iconic cover that fans will recognise is easy. Slap on a type s scout in front of a starburst and we will know its Traveller. We need a decent name that will draw in new people, but still be a recognisable traveller universe.
Chartered Space covers it, but sounds a bit lame if you don't know Traveller.
Traveller;Prime is quite good. My second favourite infact....
Something catchy including the word "Humaniti" would also be quite good. But I can't think of anything off the top of my head...

Iridium Throne is no less tied to one polity than Third Imperium is. Further, it's LESS informative.
I know, but I wasn't going for informative so much. Like I said a cover with a scout and starburst will let Traveller fans know its Traveller. There can be a little subtitle saying "the Original Traveller Universe" and a new player can read the back cover for more if they are interested.
It's just something that might sound a bit grandious and interesting to someone new, while at the same time sounding OK when discussing it with people who have played for a while.

Third Imperium is fine when you have played for a while. Infact it suits better than Iridium Throne. But if I had never heard either and was wandering a store looking for something new, Iridium Throne would sound a bit more exotic and interesting than Third Imperium.

Ah yes, the $40K game ;) I was forgetting that confusion potential :(

It (GES) is a bit... dry? I find not so much that Ziru Sirka is so First Imperium as probably unrecognizable and an unlikely lure for new players.

You should have a doctor check that cough ;)

Iridium Throne is ok, my problems with it... (and here goes more of the good (evil) doctor ganymede's noted dissension in the ranks :) ) is not so much as noted by Aramis it being tied to one polity (kinda figured the OTU was one polity, with the others being separate) as it being too general and vague and focusing too much on the Throne, rather than the Travellers and all of the space, and the travelling :)

I do think 'The Iridium Throne' would be a perfect title for a Nobles supplement. But that's a whole other thread.

The Golden Age of the Spinward Main?

Are you more interested in the time or the place? If you intend to focus your OTU publications on the Spinward Marches, then....

Traveller: Adventures in the Spinward Marches!

...works for me.
