Orion Pirate ships

Sooo the Orions in SFU they appear to use whatever technology they can get thier hands on - being pirates is there any reason why they don't use other peoples ships?

A pirate Klingon cruiser or Romulan ship would be great - even a Federation ship in pirate colours could be great fun.

Is this something that has been done in SFU? and pics ?

They have their own shipyards capable of building designs suitable for their purposes - they rely heavily on stealth to do their thing and the Raiders and the yards have to hide pretty well. Its not easy taking a full blown warship and expecting to keep it, so they tend to strip and sell (hides the evidence as well) - they keep systems they want.

There is a race that kind of fits what you want - the WYN - thats a cluster of pirates, outcasts and exiles based in a big nebula object on the corner of Kzinti, Klingon and Lyran space. The nebula totally knackers ships for a while after they pass through and the weaker ships of the WYN fleet then hit the bigger enemy ships while their shielding pants are down.
They have a range of converted civilian ships (auxiliaries basically), plus a few smaller ship from the surrounding races either nicked, interned after they pile into the nebula, defected after fleeing to the nebula, or sold to maintain the balance of power - they have significant contacts with the Orions and in later stages of the SFU a series of homegrown dedicated warships come into play. I'd suggest that they are what you are looking for in the SFU.

The Wyn use purchased Orion ships as well, so you have a mix of armed freighters, orion ships and crappy frigates with loads of extra guns tacked on.

They're a rag tag underdog fleet you just want to root for.

In the SFU pirates usually do not have the firepower to take down a navy ship. Over the years slowly but surely a number of conjectural design have been made for the Orion "Empire" so people could use them as a major power in campaigns but historically the heaviest operating Orion unit is a CA and those are used by crime bosses to keep thee contract employees in line, not to attack other empires navies.

In a case where a pirate was somehow able to capture or "salvage" a major fleet unit they Almost always stripped it and destroyed the evidence to avoid reprisals. If a pirate was to capture a Heavy Cruiser the embarrassed navy would go on a major anti piracy blitz to kill or capture everyon who even remotely waas responsible. This is very bad for any self respecting pirates business.

Now with all that said there was one case close to what you are asking about it is a case where after a successful mutniy on a Klingon D6 the loyal officers seperated the boom and ran for help. Unfortunately for the Klingons therewith was a Orion operation going on in the same space so they made of with the rear Hull and mounted the foreward section of a Orion Raider Crusier. This ship for many years was the most powerful Orion Heavy Unit and was pasted or leased to numerous cartels over the year.

Give me a moment and I will find a picture of it.

On the note of Orion ships, does anyone know how their SFU 'option mount' weapons will be handled in ACTA? Will they work as special abilities that allow a player to trade out Disruptors for Plasma Torpedoes, for example or will there be multiple editions of a Raider or Salvage Cruiser with each having different weapon mixes?

Thanks for your help!

Scott

I heard something somewhere that Orions will be able to mount either photon torpedoes or disruptors, no change in cost... makes sense, since the weapons are the same cost in FC/SFB. Plasma torpedoes are a more complicated case. You might swap each photon/disruptor for a plasma-F and charge 8 points more per plasma, see how that goes...
