Obsession for ordinary characters (not sorcerers)

A new idea came up at today's session - what if fate points could be used with obsession by characters, like power points? For example, that a barbarian obsessed with avenging the murder of his wife could remove one fate point for it and if he succeeded, would get the fate point back and receive one extra as a bonus.

I think it kind of fits the game nice! I already ruled with my players that they can gamble with fate points with obsession if they like, but only with one point at the time. Likewise, the goal needs to be rather hard to reach. In the example of revenge, the culprit would need to be someone hard to reach, let's say, over a thousand miles away and well protected.

What do you think?

I like the idea. I tinker with the various elements like EXP and fate points etc. quite a bit. Recently I permitted a player to regain a much needed fate point at teh cost of half his EXP to the next level for example. I think of the various elements as tools to help you play. Do with them as you will.

Yeah, sounds cool. Anything to promote players participation and activity. How you have thought to actually implement it? Do you introduce something potential during the game and players can then pick it up as the obsession or do they have to invent it themselves? What about party obsessions? Let's say that one powerful bandit lord has done somthing that got everybody in the party to really boil it over. Can they all get obsessed to get even with that smug b*stard?

Not so sure, but characters other than sorcerers would be losing fate points all the time... And in this game, it is a fate almost worse than death to run out of them...

Sorcerers are concerned with sorcerery. That is their obsession.

Sounds like a clever idea. Fate points in my campaign are viewed diffrently by each player. One hoards, the scholar has used his against corruption, the Vanir kept the corruption but uses them on story plots mostly (automaticly slips his bonds, etc.), our Hyrkanian saves them for damage only. It would be a fun alternative goal. I have only given them in the past for defeating major creatures not of this earth, and that affected a large group of people. Should be simple enough to work into a story line. Thanks for the great thought!
