Well it certainly would, every time the pulse mode would be out of range....
And when closing with the enemy when you might want to use CAF (you do only lose a few inch for the down the middle maneuver). And it gives you better options.
Even when in the middel of the enemy fleet, it might be fun to touch a hyperion os some other heavily int protected ship with light armor, without sending in fighters to die to AF weapons.
