Has anyone here read Heimskringla?

Yes, i have read most of it and i'm quite familiar with it since my father works as a norwegian teacher. Besides that i've studied norwegian history in college... and Snorri's work is about the only written source about viking age politics in Norway.

Of course. The island where I'm raised is mentioned: Hisingen. It's said to be full of harsh men that are difficult to raid. I've always been proud of that bit :P

Don't think that Stavanger (where I was born) is mentioned in any of the Sagas. Shame I don't remember much of any Norwegian :(

Not to despair Daz, i found Stavanger mentioned tvice in Heimskringla. Once in a verse in the Saga of Magnus the Good and once in the Saga of Magnus the Blind and Harold Gille. I got the qoutes from the Norwegian version if you want to try your hand at it:

[i said:
Saga of Magnus the Good[/i]"]Nordfra styrte der de stive
stavner ut forbi Stavanger.
Havet bruste. Mastetopper
skinte blankt som ild i sola.

Saga of Magnus the Blind and of Harald Gille[/i]"]Reinald biskop i Stavanger var engelsk ; han ble reknet for å være svært pengekjær.
