Noble Armada newbie questions

During a game of Noble Armada during the weekend a few questions came up and we couldn't be certain of the answers by reading the rules.

1: When gatling lasers fire in point defence, do they get to roll all 3AD against each incoming weapon, or only once during the turn to be split between incoming weapons? For example, a Maestekulos is being attacked by several Al-Malik ships in its port arc, receiving attacks from all the rockets and missiles from several Matachins. Does it get the full 3AD against each rocket and missile, or is it defenceless after putting 1AD against each of the first three attacks?

2: Does "Close Blast Doors" allow you to try to save troops which are killed during a boarding action?

3: Do carriers include free fighters the way they do in B5, or do you need to buy their fighters separately?

Amusing incident: after getting round the back of a Maestekulos so they didn't need to worry about gatling lasers any more, a squadron of Matachins started thinking about boarding. The Matachin's speed is 12. The Maestekulos' speed is 4, and that's before it's taken a couple of crits which knock its speed down to 2. The Matachins couldn't board because it was impossible to avoid overshooting, they ran circles round the Maestekulos but couldn't close. (Yes, they could have done "All Stop", then "All Stop and Pivot", but we're new to this game and anyway it was getting late and everyone was tired. I thought of that solution a day later. :))

1. gatling lasers can be used against every separate attack, so would fire the full 3 dice against each weapon fired in your example. the dice only get split against fighters (so getting swarmed is a possibility).
they can be used against fighters, missiles/torpedoes and boarding all in the same turn.

2. no

3. as per book 2 you get the basic fighter for free now but have to pay for upgrades to bombers etc and you can only take fighters on carriers, no separate fighter wings

Good, that's exactly how we played it.

This one we got wrong. My Hazat boarders would have been happy to know this. :)

Are you sure you can't buy separate fighters? I wasn't expecting to buy several fighters for 10 points, but I did expect that if I'd bought my choice of capital ships and had 10 points left over I could get a spare Dagger.

Presumably in that case if I get a Trafalgar I get 12 Daggers free and can spend 10 points to upgrade one of them to a Harpy? The Dagger is 10 points, the Harpy is 20 points, so it's 10 points of difference, there being no point giving a price for the Harpy if the only way to get one is free in a carrier.

Upgrade costs are different now to the main book.

If you just have the main book you had to pay for fighters in your carriers and you could buy separate ones too.
However if you have book 2 (fleets of the fading suns) then it shows you get basic fighters for free and pay an upgrade cost ti take bombers etc (usually about 5pts upgrade) and you can't have more fighters than carrier capacity
. Destroyers also cost more in this book

Thanks!

I imagine the new rules are to prevent someone from fielding a fleet composed of lots and lots of separate fighters.

And I've seen a few comments about "Fleets of the Fading Suns" which were not very complimentary about the price rise for destroyers. :)

Hang on a minute, I've just found this:

Each weapon is not a seperate trigger - _all_ weapons are, so it is quite possible to overwhelm gatling lasers, especially by an al Malik fleet.
According to that, then, we were wrong - the gatling laser should be split between incoming weapons.

Destroyers needed the price rise as they are one of the best ships. Will have to recheck the Gatling laser rules
