No Free RPG Day, No Book 0

Mongoose
I am seriously bummed. No one around here was doing anything for Free RPG day and I didn't even know about Book 0 until just now :( I would have LOVED to have gotten one of these and I would have made SURE a lot of others got one too, to promote this most excellent game :(

Allen: I don't normally shill for my FLGS, but hit www.boscos.com , and email them. They have a bunch left. I'm fairly certain you can get them to ship you one (maybe even three) Free RPG items for shipping cost alone. (I went in 20min before closing... still about a cubic foot of Free RPG product left.)

Thanks! I have written them. I appreciate the help; this is the kind of little Traveller stuff I like to collect anyway and I have been trying to talk up the game around here. I wish I could get a ton of these things to have on the counter at the store so curious people would pick them up and look at them, but one will do for now :)

This book really needs broader exposure, even if only as a PDF. Good demo team/convention support materials are a rarity, and to have the first thing like that for MGT be a limited edition is disappointing.

I flipped through Book 0 at the FLGS yesterday and put it back. Why? Two reasons: It isn't the CT Book 0, and there is nothing in it I don't already have in the main book; second, the opportunity to attract others diminishes by one copy if I take one, since I know it would just go into the collection.

Put a character sheet and a larger Prior History worksheet in the back, slap a $2 price tag on the paper edition (if you must), and get them out there. Don't wait for another FRPG Day.

I believe MGP will make Book 0 available to FLGS, with a price, later in the year(s). Some one had told me it would sell for about $10 USD, but i hope it has more info in it at that price.

Yikes!

Savage Worlds Ex:Editons sells for $10-
I think around $5 would be more resonable, with a very short adventure and pregens included would be better...

From the news entry on Book 0, [while] "Book 0 may reappear down the road, this will be the only day it is available in this particular format."

At the least I'd hope a (free) pdf version. If not free (print or pdf) I'd like more material, like your suggestions & a adventure like others suggested.

This Book 0 does have a custom for Book 0 character sheet at the back. Don't see any prior history sheet, could be handy, could be derived from the chargen checklist.

Not having an adventure didn't bother me as I don't use premade adventures, there are several free ones in S&P already (and an ad for S&P in Book 0), and I have several other Traveller adventures. I'm more pleased that the rules were given more coverage than say the Starseige demo, which is what I was most interested in learning about in Mongoose Traveller. But if they're going to charge for it, an adventure would help see the designers intent and be example of play & rules.

I to suffered from having the nearest participating LGS be too many miles away from me.

And I want Traveller Book 0.

So, go to your FLGS, and tell of the road trip you made to get the FRPG items, and of the $35 you spent in his competitors store.

What held up most retailers from getting a FRPG package was the $95 Fee for a "Free " event. We made the items 'free with purchase", a minimum of $5 for 0ne item, $10 for two items. Sold lotsa dice, and no one complained. Some actually praised us for that, since it kept the looters away.

Thanks to Alex, Matt, et all, all at Mongoose, for participating in Free RPG Day.

They charged you $95??

I realize that this was supposed to be a "loss leader"; spend dome money and get people into your store but that's a lot of loss there! No wonder my local store didn't participate (that plus the fact that they didn't know about it).

Charging 95$ is crazy, but I do like Book 0. I got a bunch for my players I think they will be invalible. I suspect Mongoose will probably just put it out as a free download or a price of printing paperback. It doesn't make them money to charge for it, it is the perfect advertising to pull people into buying the real books.

It took alot of consideration, but after it all, it was well worth it! I will do it next year! The fee was primarlly for shipping & organising the whole thing.. I made my invest back in the first 20-30 items out the door. Every thing else was gravy, plus many new customers.

My FLGS didnt even hear about it until it was to late to get it. Not sure they would have sprung for the fee if they had. But the order guy is a big trav fan so they may have.

I would have liked to at least see what it looked like. Might be able to stir up a few more players.

I don't think that approach would work around here. Not to mention the fact that 200 miles to a game store and 200 miles back is a bit much for my hobby satisfaction.

See, we have two stores that are part of the old Gameboard chain and they don't want to touch Free RPG Day or any other game promotional day event for some unknown reason. The other, independant, comics and game store was recently screwed over by their game distributor and refuse to use them* (and unfortunately its not cost-effective for the owner to get new games in while he has a bunch of old d20 stock left).

* Owner was sent a bunch of Warhammer CCG Packs (which don't sell well in this area) that he hadn't ordered and the distributor wanted him to pay for the unwanted order before he recieved the games he had ordered - so he sent the CCGs back and doesn't use that distributor any more.

Actually, I like this system or one similar to it. My local game store gave away one freebie per customer. (I picked Traveller book 0 even though I have the new hardback because I wanted something for my players to paw over rather than touching my book. :P )

It was unfortunate becasue I missed out on other items from other companies I would have liked to look at.

At least if the freebies could be tied to sales somehow I could have gotten some of that stuff.

I got the book in the mail today. Boscos looks good...given the state my local store is in I may need to order stuff online, so I will be keeping them in mind.

Good deal.

It's a store owned by geeks, run by geeks, and run for geeks. The owner is a comics and board games geek. THe manager is a board and RPG gamer, and the guy who introduced me to Palladium games back in HS. The guy who does their ordering is in my RPG group....

... So they understand!
