Many thanks for the input and to "The old soldier " for his ideas...

SO far the rule stands...

NIGHT TIME FIGHTING

ALL WEAPON RANGES ARE 1/2 RANGE, ALL TARGETS GET A +2 TO TARGET SCORE

****
NIGHT VISION : STILL HALF RANGE, BUT NO +2 TO TARGET.

All modern tanks will have some form of night vision, and all modern troops should have this item, maybe a extra +5points to troop unit cost.

FUTURE WARRIOR UNITS
Have the lastest items, so for them the following rule

FULL RANGE, NO +2 TO TARGET

OR

Normal range but with a +2 to Target, night vision removes the + 2 to T

We could have Gen 1 vision at 1/2" range, and Gen 2 with heat etc at standed...?

Most MBT's have thermographic night vision, which is almost superior to daylight in some regards, expecially at night. Its easier to see troops and vehicles, except in certain specific, limited instances.

And since at least the Land Warrior fluff in the Advanced Rules mentions their thermographic vision capability, I don't see night fighting being debilitating enough to warrant more than perhaps a +1 to the target modifier. I don't see range being signficantly effected, since Land Warrior also incorporates friendly recognition. I would imagine that the EFTF would benefit from their similar troop systems. I might concede a need to incorporate range reduction if the unit doesn't have thermographic night vision and some type of IFF.

The PLA (infantry units, excluding their SOF) and the MEA, on the other hand would likely not benefit from widespread use of night fighting electronics. I doubt PLA vehicles would be similarly hamstrung, though I imagine that MEA vehicles may be purchased with night vision equipment, but that their continued maintenance would be problematic for non-regular formations (perhaps a roll of 4+ of 5+ to see if it has functional night capability at the start of a scenario). I imagine some MEA snipers could also pick up surplus IR scopes, with similar limitations on functionality.

With all this said, I will make a nod to The Old Soldier's KISS mantra. I'd like it stay simple too, but a blanket penalty (especially for the electronics heavy USMC & EFTF) just doesn't feel right.

Regards,
Larry
