Next Campaign - The Core Expeditions

kafka

Mongoose
Secrets of the Ancients is an excellent basis for a long campaign and I cannot wait until it is fully realized. However, it got me to thinking what would be a good idea for the next OTU Campaign. Exploration has long been neglected in Traveller. Perhaps, Mongoose would like to take up the mantile of Grand Explorations? A fully unrealized campaign supplement that deals with the Zhodani Galactic Core Expeditions or the Solomani Perseus Expeditions. Both provide a wide open field with lots of room to experiment with concepts hitherto untried in Traveller...

I am not sure, but I seem to remember that the original Zhodani alien
module for Classic Traveller has an adventure about the Core Expedi-
tions ?

Don't they have to take that into account the Empress Wave for an expedition? For better or worse it is part of canon as part of the OTU. I understand that it is not in the original Alien Module since AM was written before the Empress Wave reared its ugly head. Maybe people in jump space cannot feel its effects, and that is why no one mentioned it before. Its main effects to the Consulate are over a century away from 1105, but it's a coming. At lightspeed of propagation that means its only one sector or so away. Hmm. Maybe they could include something like "In recent years, some systems in the periphery of the Consulate have become...unstable. People are reporting an extreme disharmony due to" and add all the rest psionics impact and so on.

So? Throw in the Empress Wave as they get nearer the core. At light speed it is about 1 sector closer to the Core than it will be in TNE (1201 anyway)...

Funny that the Zho's didn't find it on any of their earlier expeditions though... Damn mindfreaks always hiding something!

Sorry. I guess what I should have said was "Don't forget to put in the Empress Wave!"

OTOH, I would prefer Solomani Rim/Perseus expedition. I am a sort of Solomani Uber Alles kind of guy. :P

Ah, this reminds me (fondly) of the Leviathan campaign I ran way back when.

"To seek out new life forms -- and exploit them.
"To explore strange new worlds -- and industrialise them.
"To boldly go where no man has screwed over naive investors before!!"

Yeah, Leviathan was all about expanding the Corporation's profit margin at the expense of some poor dumb suckers who didn't know about Imperial Megacorporate practices...

The Empress Wave in the MgT timeline would be a marginal affair...sort of the Great Galactic Barrier in Star Trek. For ships with psions on board, yes, they might go mad but the proles might also go mad through the beasties out there.

So, the Empress Wave would be a mystery, as well as an opportunity. It is also possible that a Task Group Misjump behind the Wave.

My comment about the EW was more from the point of view that the Zhos had many Core Expeditions, and with the Wave moving at the speed of light, it would only be a sector or so coreward of the Imperial border in 1100. Back in 1000 it would be about 2 sectors away, about 1 sector coreward of the Consulate. They should have found it a LONG time ago, but somehow never did... OR DID THEY (dah dah DUMMMMMM)

That's all I'm saying. The EW was a late addition to the OTU and it seemed to contradict earlier material (unlike ANYTHING else...)

Never mind, just being snarky...
BUT, if someone were to write up this campaign, maybe they could explain it.... retcon it if you will.

The core expeditions have always intrigued me, but forgive me for my ignorance so I'm just going to go ahead and put it on display for everyone. The Consulate is coreward on the map so it seems they have a natural path for an expedition to the core but the Solomani are at the bottom of the map rimward. How did they mount a core expedition?

I must have missed something, because I am not aware of any core ex-
pedition of the Solomani ?

I'm only basing that on what I read on the other board. It's possible they were wrong, it didn't seem to make a lot of sense to me given their stellar-graphic location.

Ok, maybe I read something wrong. In the first post in this thread kafka mentions the Solomani Perseus Expedition. What's that referring to? Thanks.

Seconded. Is this canon? MGT territory? GURPS?

Mind you, GURPS did create 100-ton Jump-6 racing yachts for the rich elite to play with...

GURPS? Bah, did that ages ago with CT HG :) (drop tanks required but otherwise simple) I'm sure Mongoose Traveller will permit the same if you want to, probably even with more free tonnage.

The Solomani Perseus Expedition ... here is what I found in the Traveller
Timeline compiled by Don McKinney:

"1050 Perseus Project launched. The Solomani Confederation sends 17
base ships out to the Perseus Arm, the next arm to rimward of our own
Sagittarian Arm. Solomani and Aslan, the Rimward Races, DGP, 1992, p.
11."

you can get to that arm by going rimward/triling i believe, or is it rimward/spinward?

In any case no need to go coreward.

Yep, this one obviously was a Rimward Expedition. :D

If I remember correctly, this was a fan based initiative. Like the Zhodani Core Expeditions, it was an exploration, but headed out to the Perseus Arm and the edge of the galaxy.
