New to Traveller - Confused on Character gen

Hello all. I apologize if this was answered elsewhere, but being at work and with 17 pages of posts, I thought this would be best.

I'm a little confused when it comes to genning a character as I'm possibly reading conflicting information.

Let's say I'm making a rogue (Pirate). If I successfully enter that career, I'm considered Rank 0 (Lackey). I gain the full list of Service Skills @ 0 as well as 1 roll on any applicable skill list from Rogue.

I then make a survival Roll (Let's say I succeed).

I then roll for an Event.

Then I roll for advancement, saying I succeed, and become Rank 1 (Henchemen) gaining the skill or benefit listed by Henchmen and one roll for a skill

Is this correct so far?

If so, than the example provided seems to be off one rank.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

As a recent returnee to Traveller I also had to work it all out too. I also noticed the point you made about the Jamison example.

I came to the conclusion that the example was wrong.

It says he gets promoted and receives the mechanic -1 skill for being 4th Officer. If you look at the promotion charts, mechanic-1 comes with Rank 1 (Senior Crewman)

But this mistake seems to continue throughout the example.

So I am pretty sure you are doing it all right. I hope we are!

Any time you succeed in your advancement roll you get a) any complimentary skill listed for that rank and b) one BONUS skill roll on any table you are normally allowed to roll on.

If you make a successful Advancement roll, then you move to the next rank and gain an extra roll on any of the Skills and Training Tables for this career. You also get any benefits listed for your new rank. You may only attempt to advance once per term.

So when you advance... sometimes you gain 2 skills.

That sounds like a mistake to me. Someone read off the enlisted column rather than the officer one.

Merchants do not have separate officer and enlisted ranks. Only the military careers Army, Marines and Navy have officer and enlisted ranks.

Perhaps in play test the ranks were different and they got changed before printing but the example chargen was never updated with the new changes. Just my guess. Anyone involved in play test that can determine if the ranks published are different?
