New to paranoia

Besides the rpg bundle pack (which seems great value to me)

do I need the little red book? And what else is a neccesity and why?

The bundle pack *IS* a good deal!

You don't need the Little Red Book, but it is handy to give to Players and now have them worry about getting information they're not supposed to have. Great for people new to Paranoia. But not neccessary.

Nothing else is a neccesity when it comes to Paranoia. The game doesn't have set rules or anything. It changes constantly, and what was a sure thing yesterday is a reason to be terminated today.

I highly suggest "Flashbacks", which is a bunch of the old, but very, very, *VERY* good adventures! I demo games from it in particular! And my first introduction to Paranoia XP (I had played the earlier versions from WEG) was Robot Imana-665-C (Run by Greg Costikyan himself!) which is in the book.

I've heard good things about Extreme Paranoia, but I'm waiting a few paycheques until I get that one...

STUFF is a great book that I personally love, but isn't needed. Any amount of Imagination (And a touch of Sadism) could allow you to make more STUFF. Also good to show the PCs what C-Bay is like. Also has some HILARIOUS advertisements that are just great for copying and handing out as "Spam Messages" on the PDC.

Ok cheers ray.
Is it very easy to demo roleplaying games? 'cuz I was thinking of demoing Paranoia once I've got used to it, but I was wondering if its hard because people might be totally new to roleplaying itself.

I wouldn't suggest Paranoia as a game to introduce people to Role Playing in general. It's *THE* infamous "Strange Animal" of the Role Playing world.

But it's very quick and easy to pick up and learn. You only need one D20. And the GM is the only one that knows the rules, so, if you encounter something that isn't covered by the rules, make something up on the spot and *DARE* the Rules Lawyers to contradict you. That's grounds for Termination of the Character by the other PCs who will be rewarded.

Unforetunetly, one of the best primers for Paranoia that I've seen (A Fan-Film in Flash based on the Knights of the Dinner Table) is offline right now.

OK, rambling again. Sorry.

In essence ("What? The loss of soul to Cybernetics?" "No, wrong game." "Oh."), I wouldn't suggest it for an Introduction to Role Playing, but for experienced RPGers (Even ones who have only gamed a few times), it's perfect!

It's quick, easy, and fun! There's no complicated portions you need to worry about, the characters are inept because the game is supposed to run that way, you aren't trying to save the world (Just yourself), and it's goes great with beer and pretzles!

Please note that most public places (At least in uptight North America) won't allow beer on the premises due to stupid laws and "Family Enviroment". I do not condone Role Playing while under the influence. Do not drink and drive people insane.

NO interest in paranoia myself, but I could not help notice demoing. I felt comfortable running games after running the same scenario about.... thre or four times, by that stage I knew how to grasp running a game and dealing with people.

hmmm.
I have paranoia, I also have the old GW one.
I do not know anything about the background, but have read 1984 by George Orwell (if that is significant at all).

Ray, you've been useful, looks like I should get the little red book. :)

HUZZAH! I'm useful! :P

The Little Red Book is a great way to see if you're interested in the universe or not. Gives you everything you need to know, without being too costly.

An excellent idea in my mind!

That's the best part!

Great to lend out to someone who might be interested, and not be *TOO* angry if they don't give it back.

Still annoying, however.

OR cheap enough if someone wants to get into it Coz with most games you have to spend **** loads to get into like rulebooks, extra books for your force, then the force itsself!

Thats kinda what put me off BF:EVO as I am quite skint right now and the sqauds in that are pretty expenive (in my view)

There's no rules in the Red Book. None at all.

It's just a statement of what the Universe of Paranoia is to a Red Citizen's point of view.

A bit on character creation, admittedly, but you are going to need the main rulebook to run the game.

At least it isn't like OTHER games where you practically need a "Player's Guide" or some such for each person. The GM needs one to be The Computer, and the rest of the group can share the Red Book to learn about the Universe.

ah ok

but i mean it is a generally cheap game so if someone wanted to start and have there own books to play with other people it is possible without blowing too much cash

Yep, it's the Beer and Pretzel Game that leaves you enough money *FOR* Beer and Pretzels!

(Pretzels not available in the US by Presidential Decree).

My opinion of Paranoia:
One twisted person plays the computer, reading the Big Book cover to cover and laughing all the way.

The rest of the group can read the little red book to get the "flavor" of the game. They should not know or worry about the rules, just be a "good" citizen. Of course we all know in real life that you can drive 5 mph over the speed limit and still be a "good" citizen. You may even be able to drive 15 over and be a "good" citizen. It's when you get caught that you become a bad citizen. Really bad citizens get terminated. Same goes for Paranoia.

It's kinda like Cthuhlu, the less you read about the rules/monsters/treasure, the more that you'll enjoy the game. Not knowing is MUCH of the fun.

Got it in the post two days ago, and I've flicked through the beginning. Its briliant! I love the scene its setting at the moment

Just wait until your Players find out that surviving the breifing alone is difficult.

The demo I just ran had my first maiming five seconds after the Mission Alert!

"Shoot the Commie and win Fifty Credits appears on your PDC, blocking out the Mission Alert."

"Wow! Fifty Credits! I shoot the Commie!"

"Your PDC freezes, then crashes."

"Awwwwwwwwww... Oh oh oh! I have the 'Hit it hard enough to make it work once more before dying' skill, I'll use that!"

"OK. It starts up." *Makes noises of a Apple Mac Classic-II starting* "It starts up, loads all you icons, and then fizzles out and starts smoking and beeping."

The Beeping was the self-destruct. He just strapped it to his belt and tried to remember what he could of the Mission Alert!

Little known fact about the PDC1300 (Standard Issue Personal Digital Companion for Troubleshooters) is that they can double as Frag Grenades.

Really, really, really pricey frag grenades!

You'll get to it in the Equipment Section.
