New Player Looking at Starting?

Hey there I am looking at starting this game and have a couple of quick questions since my FLGS carries _no_ B5 products.

I am looking at playing a Vree fleet while my opponent is going to play Narn.

What books will be necessary to play the respective fleets?

What is the typical fleet size for a game?

Thank You,
Casey

Well you will need the revised edition box set and that will give you everything you need to start playing but I HIGHLY reccomend you also pick up Sky Fullo of Stars and Armageddon which will bring you up to date fully with the current ruleset and give you access to all the various ships for both the fleets mentioned.

I would warn though, Vree are NOT the easiest fleet to play at first as ALL your ships are VERY fragile (thogh they can outmaneuver ANYTHING and have excellent weaponry especially when facing an interceptorless fleet as with the Narn (well with the exception of their newest most advanced ships).

Narn can also be something of an aquired taste in terms of play style. My advice? Buy the box set and the expansion books and play with the ample supply of counters in the box for a few games before you fix yourself on any particular fleet. Then once youre SURE thats the fleet you want to play, THEN buy the miniatures. After all, 50 quids worth of minis as in the box sets is alot to spend if you then decide 'actually I dont like the vree I'd rather play brakkiri etc...'

As for typical game size, well can be anything really, but most people tend to play around 5 point raid or 5pt battle for one off games in my experience. Where ACTA REALLY shines though is in campaign play :)

As a newbie myself I would also recommend getting the revised boxed set. This has the rules and alot of counters including the counters to play the Vree.

I would also second getting the Sky Full Of Stars book as it has every fleet except the Dilgar and Drahk. This book also includes ship variants not included in the starter set. It also has a few more advanced rules for planetary assaults etc.. a good buy and is a hardback book

That is what my mates and I are using at the moment. I have started EA and Centauri and so have some models for each but I did play a few games with just counters first.

You can teach somone the basics of the game in 10 minutes and I would recommend using the record sheets LBH and some of the others have made in the Player resources Sticky for easy book keeping.

Any questions and this board has a lot of great people who can give you friendly and helpful advice.

One thing to bear in mind is that the League of non-aligned worlds in the main box are a single unified list with a handful of ships from each race. SFOS expands each major League race into a seperate fleet.
