New GM - How to start an environment

Tigleth Pilisar

Banded Mongoose
I'm new to traveller, although I played the original 25 years ago. I bought Mongoose's core rules and the first adventure.

I'm wondering about how to get an already developed galaxy. I know I could spend a bunch of time making one, but is there anything already made?

The Spinward Marches and Trojan Reaches? Are these my answer? Are they just maps?

Does anyone share their develped ideas for a system of worlds?

Thanks.

They are more then just maps, includes details about some of the worlds within the location as well. In addition to the UWP's.

There are a few worlds in Signs & Portents and some here on the forum.

If you intend to use the Third Imperium setting, I would recommend the
Spinward Marches book, it contains both some background information
on the setting in general and a detailed description of the Spinward Mar-
ches region.

If you would prefer a different setting, there are many options available,
commercial ones as well as fan created ones.
Two examples of many are the Far Avalon setting, written by the same
author as the Spinward Marches book, and the Reign of Discordia setting.
However, both do not contain game stats, you would have to add them.

There is a free fan made setting at this link. Set in the Terran Rim of the OTU at the end of the Long Night.

I'd recommend the Spinward Marches book. Even if you don't use that as your setting it's got lots of content you can adapt/use for inspiration.

I use that and the Traveller wiki to build my content.

Seconded. I'm not 100% in love with Spinward Marches, but it's a good jumping-off point and a way of getting everyone together. Once you go through character generation most players have a few goals they want to accomplish or people they want to avoid, so if you start your campaign on a fairly neutral planet (Mora works well for both trading and military campaigns) that gives them the chance to expand outwards.

I'd hit google and check out the myriad traveller fan sites out there. There's tons of material out there, some of it close to the official traveller settings, some of it wildly divergent.

Two good, and easy to browse, sites to get started with are:

http://www.freelancetraveller.com/

and

http://www.travellerrpg.com

Freelance Traveller, the first link, supports all versions of the game. In theory, Traveller RPG/Citizens of the Imperium, the second link, does too, but it is the website of the publishers of Traveller T20 (the D20 edition of Traveller), so there's a slight preference to that material, as well as Classic Traveller, with other editions getting less support.

If you just need setting ideas though, or you're willing to rules tinker a bit, the edition of the game the material is written for shouldn't matter too much.

Edit: One more excellent site I overlooked:

http://www.downport.com/

The Traveller Downport
Tons of material and links to a lot more., worth checking out.
