New Beam rules.

Beams aren't neccesarilyless effective. They can be awesome. Remember that while beams are less effective against Hull 4 ships than in 1e, there are less Hull 4 ships than Hull 6 ships. Also remember new beams are much more effective than AP Beam weapons or beams with no armour piercing trait at all.

We are re-evaluating every ship in 2e. There is barely a ship that has not been changed in some way.

Try the 4+ beams - as others on here have done even if the AD may change slightly - they are not worse just different.

The chances of either a glancing ineffective strike or a brutal cutting slice seem to be higher (or seem to be) probably more in keeping with the show................

I understand that for some ships and the Brakiri & Abbai this is a great change (and as a Brakiri player I do appreciate the difference it makes), but it still stands that most ships with beam have SAP and so most ships would be worse.

If it was just hull 4 ships that were effected it'd be less of an issue but these style of Beams are also less effective against hull 5 ships, plus in most fleets you will find more hull 4 & 5 ships fielded than hull 6 (just because cheaper more numerous ships tend to have lower hulls).

Therefore while some ships and even fleets benefit many others get their main weapons weakened.

Good and I wasn't meaning to say that you weren't it was just that the scale of these changes and the comments of one of EP of "I find myself using the non-beams way more now!" just made me nervous.

Partly my issue is that it's just a mechanism I'm happy with even when on the receiving end and so have something of a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" attitude. That said if a simpler mechanism is needed to get more gamers in go for it. Just makes me nervous is all.

that was because in 1st ed the "choice build" as such is to choose as many hull 6 beam armed ships as possible. The others get ignored. With the changes the lower hulled ships are more survivable and the non-beam weapons are competitive :)
