New Admirals

Instead of increasing a ships PL, an admiral should cost a point below the level of the ship. So a Battle level ship would cost a Battle + a Raid point. If, for some very odd reason, you are putting one on a patrol ship it would just cost 2 patrol. This would also make admirals more appealing to take. Bumping a War ship to an armageddon ship just never seemed worth it to me

I *do* agree with putting the admiral on the highest level ship. Otherwise players would put them on a cheaper ship in order to get more benefit from a less expensive cost, primarily the admirals that have fleet wide effects.

The problem is, even with fleet wide effects, Admirals aren't worth the cost.

I don't think that Delenn as an admiral is worth selecting, she gives a +2 to initiative and allows you to fire on a skeleton crewed ship but whats the point in the plus to making an enemy ship stand down?

Not all Admiral effects are great in every situation. And it suits her line from 'Severed Dreams.'

I think that its great that you can design your own admirals but using the rules for doing so you can't make such powerful admirals as the independent ones Mongoose have designed.

The uniques admirals aren't significantly better than generic ones. Sheridan is pretty poor if he isn't on a White Star. One of Jha'dur's abilities is only useful if the ship she is on is destroyed.

There were unique admirals for first edition in S&P. But quite how balanced they are compared to 2e admirals, I don't know.

Which is why I opened with saying they should cost less. A Battle ship costing a Battle point + a Raid point is less than it costing a War point. Is it worth it? Still probably not :( which really sucks, since they add yummy flavor to the game

For the fleet-magnifiers, it's absolutely worth it (Delenn, Jha'dur, Ivanova, et.al.). Jha'Dur in the Targrath/Omelos assault fleet is hideous, because Bolters + Crippled will generate all sorts of hideous opportunities for explosions in the middle of fleets.

I personally think that each race should get a "soopa" admiral even if they are not canon. It would even the playing field.

Admirals should be part of big battles. It irks me that some fleets get all the love and most are left out.
I agree, even if I must admit I cannot figure out a unique Vree admiral, knowing they are all clones :)

Fully agreed. That's why when don't use admirals so often.
In our club, we have decided that although any player can buy an admiral for the cost given in the rulebook, we can avoid the cost, by giving a "free" admiral to any players for a given battle (usually the big ones) in addition of the agreed FAP.
Then we know that there will be an admiral in each fleet but it cost nothing to the players.
This workaround allow us to add flavour to the game without having to care about the ship loss this usually implies.
