Neutron Laser Spinal Mount

Hi everybody!

As I was having fun designing a new Dreadnought I turned to the exotic section of Highguard 2022. Among the new Spinal Mounts listed there is a "Neutron Laser" and a "Super Laser" (p 82). They appear to be almost the same (TL, Range, Base Size, Power, Cost, Maximum Size). The only difference is the damage 8D (NL) vs. 14D (SL).
So what is the benefit of using the Neutron Laser? The Super Laser is the same with significantly more damage potential. Why use the Neutron Laser Spinal Mount?
Is there anything I missed?

The Super Laser is for Star Wars-style universes (obvious inspiration), and not necessarily meant to compete with other weapons. Think of it as an option for a Referee-created universe, rather than something available in every universe (applies to much of High Guard and CSC...).,

What stopped them developing massive lasers at technological level eight?

No idea. A bay laser weapon or better yet a spinal laser is a rather fearsome weapon.

There is also the option of building one laser but having many mirror arrays to direct the beam, or even split the beam so it can be fired from many arrays at once.

Supposedly the rational for the bomb pumped torpedo.

I'm pretty sure one of Reagan's proposed weapon systems was a satellite with the same concept.

It was. GDW took the idea of the nuclear bomb-pumped X-Ray Laser concept for 2300AD from the corresponding anti-ballistic missile defense system research in the SDI program.

Hi and thanks for the really quick answer. Thought I was missing something about these Neutron Lasers, but i got it. Its all about the setting. Just like the rest of the exotic tech.
