hey scoutdad what are you using the dice next to each ship to track.

Movement and firing.
When the ship has completed its move, we place a die beside it.
Later, after it's fired - we remove the die.

That makes it easy to tell at aglance whihc ships have moved or fired (depending on the phase).

Up til now, that's all we;ve needed to track, but after the large battle and some "not-so-precise" memories, we can seethat we need to generate some drone target markers as well, to track how many time a ship has been targetted by drones.

I've got several extra SFB ammo sheets, so I'll probably just throw a bunch of the drone counters in my Special Action tray and use them in the next game.

Any observations on fleet composition or tactics for all the races?

While a Fed finished third I note they also finished in seventh and eighth.

How did the Kzinti fleet do?

Mike Curtis definitely deserved to win. He wasn't sure he'd attend until the last minute, so he showed up Saturday morning and lookedthe minis left in my fleet box and built a fleet based around what was available.
But then he played superbly. His game agaisnt my Gorn was a textbook example of how to play.
I couldn't flank him because of the way he used terrain...
I couldn't cull out a ship and concentrate fire on it because everything was positioned to protect everything else...
I couldn't close on a single ship and take it out because his heavy hitters were it front and his screening elements were close behind on IDF...
It was a slaughter, but it was one of the best games I've played.

The final game against Merl was a Klingon civil war.
Both players spent 6 or 7 turns manuevering and attempting to deal more damage than they received. They match lasted for the full three hour time limit and finally was called due to time. When victory points were calculated out, less than 50 points seperated the two.

I'd say the Klingons finished first and second because they were truly the two best players, not due to vaguaries of rules or anything random.
As to the Federation players finishing 7th and 8th... neither of them were able to stay the entire day, so they did not get in a full three games.

The Kzinti well well played, but due to Boy Scout functions and school; John has not played since the drones were changed. He wasn't aware of the 18.01+ inch lock-on requirement, nor was he aware of the three ship targetting limit. Both of these hampered his initial game plan and he had a bit of trouble adapting on the fly, as it were.
Next year, he'll do much better.

I would also like to point out, as a proud father, that John is only just turned 12. :D
