Can Mongoose tell me anything different about an alien race that hasnt been covered in one of the many books i already own? I really hope so as I would like to start collecting NEW rpg's again rather than picking up previously missed games from my 27years of gaming... but i doubt it.

That's going to be their biggest problem I think. I think they've pretty much got to aim their alien books at new Traveller fans, because the old ones most likely have several versions of them already.

Guess which one I voted for

Don't be Manipulating us!

I would be interested in seeing a K'Kree book, as they always seem to come across in sourcebooks as rather incompetent. It would be nice to see them realized as more of a threat.

For any of the books, I would want to see a little more on the daily life of citizens in their space, rather than just a focus on the leadership. What does the "average" Hiver do all day?

I've never had the impression that they're "incompetent" from any sourcebook. They're the subject of much mockery on CotI at least, but as I keep saying, it's not so funny when they're carpet bombing your cities with nukes and sending down landing parties to wipe out the survivors (even the women and children) just because of what you eat.

They're paranoid, psychotic, xenophobic, militant, genocidal fundamentalists - the "crazy ones" among them are the ones who don't instantly want to kill anything they're afraid of or different from (e.g. the ones who trade with and deal with 'g'naak'). Generally they've taken "fight or flight" and turned it into "eradicate with extreme prejudice first, or maybe run away". The fact that they're evolved from herbivores doesn't make them a subject of mockery - and frankly if the K'Kree got wind of any of that kind of thing IMTU the laughs would be turning to screams in no time at all.

That's actually a very good question. I have no idea how long a Hiver needs to sleep for, if, indeed, they sleep at all. How many times a day do they need to eat? Do they have a routine, like humans? i.e. sleep-->wake-->eat etc? Do Hivers have "days off" or are they always "Hivering"? The TNE Hiver sourcebook makes it seem like Hivers are on the go, 24/7, constantly (I think it says "Hivers are always switched on", or something like that) - is that actually how they are? or do they put their tentacles up at the end of a long (or short!) day of Hivering with a G'yar and tonic and watch the news?

I think we should be told!

One for the aliens in the Alien movies. Remember, they are statted and published for CT! :D

Quite how they got away with that, I don't know... (it's in one of the issues of JTAS). It's not even an homage or something similar, it's an identical ripoff.

I'd like to see books done along the same lines as the excellent DGP MegaTraveller modules:

1-Coreward races - Vargr & Vilani
2-Rimward Races - Aslan & Solomani
3-Spinward Races - K'Kree & Hivers
4-Trailward races - Zhodani & Darrian

maybe something like that? more emphasis on roleplay and culture other than just gen stats.

Please permit a minor correction: the K'kree and Hivers are to Trailing; the Zhodani and Daryen are to Spinward.

Actually, I'd prefer to see a somewhat different breakdown:

The Foundational Races: Vilani and Solomani
The Psionic Races: Zhodani and Droyne
The Predator Races: Vargr and Aslan
The Truly Alien: Hivers and K'kree

Then some of the more potentially interesting minor races:

The * Races: Daryen and Geonee (I don't want to fill in the * with "Fantasy", although that's what I was thinking, as the Daryen and Geonee do seem to "map" to Elves and Dwarves respectively.)

The Servitor Races: Ithklur and (I forgot what they're called, but there was a K'kree subject race profiled in the original JTAS)

The Militant Races: Swordworlders and (Answerin?)

... and so on. IOW, since the most important thing about aliens (and "aliens") in RPGs is not their location or (in most cases) their physiology, but their SOCIOLOGY, pair/group them thematically on THAT basis.

(I didn't vote in the poll, nor should the order I've listed the races in be construed as representing relative interest, because I don't know which I'd like to see first. I want them ALL.)

Ahhhh. The reticulan parasite. Yes indeed. I'm sure they got away with it because it was way below the radar in....1978 (I think ?). That and the fact that the description and (possibly) the could probably fall under satire or fair use if challenged. With questions like this, I have to say I'm sorry Ty was ejected......

Still, ripoff is a harsh term for what really was a fan homage -its not like anyone didn;t know what it was based on.....but perhaps we were all much more naive then -some of us (not including me, I fear) we not even born, actually ..;)

Nah, it was a ripoff alright - it was a blatant and practically identical conversion of the Alien, even the name of the system it was found in was the same. But you're probably right about it being under the radar.

(so does that mean that Aliens are in Traveller canon? ;). That'd be a nifty crossover - screw Aliens vs Predator, how about some Aliens vs Chamax?! (with humans in the middle as usual))

yeah, maybe ripoff is the right term. And really a well used one at that - which was the adventure with the abandoned labship & monster ? or the abandoned research lab and monster.....or the random saucers delivering monsters ...oh wait, those were chamax......

How bout aliens vs Hivers ? Although, I shudder to think where the face grabber would have to latch on......

Yes! The Vegans! They need a book all to themselves. I think they're actually one of the more alien races in the OTU. AFAIK no-one has ever done anyhting beyond the usual Library Data entries on them.

I seem to remember that there was some more information on them in
one of the GURPS Traveller Aliens books, but I am not really sure - for
some reason the Vegans never interested me (too humanoid for my idea
of aliens, probably).

Someone wrote them up for TNE; ISTR it was Harold Hale... for use with his Children of Earth setting.

Good stuff.
