NA - FS Query

Stu--

Mongoose
Bought this many moons ago.. Actually read it now.. Few queries for anyone who can help.

1) Does range really not give any bonus / negative - unlike in NA:SF being over half range doesn't seem to do anything (I was expecting a -1 to-hit or something)

2) The 'Heracles class armoured cruiser' in FFS - does it really have hull 6 ?
Seems excessive..

Thanks, Stu.

Range not really seen as a factor. If you can see a target, then most likely you can shoot at that target, regardless of whether it is 2" away or 12" away.
Yes it does. Not excessive, no. There are plenty of Hull 6 ships in ACTA - Omegas and Warlocks spring to mind. Expensive ships, but they can be taken out. Having a variable hull score in ACTA is one of the best mechanics of the game: it enables you to stack the hull score along with special rules to really give a ship a unique feel. I can't think of anything more boring than "A 4 to hit. Again. Next ship then - oh, remarkable, a 4 to hit". Lol!

Thanks for the answers :)
One other thing.. I bought the FFS module online on wargame vault, where the only feedback starts "This is a godawful lousy product."
see here.. http://www.wargamevault.com/product_reviews_info.php?&reviews_id=82362&products_id=103393

regardless, I bought it anyway - is the feedback about lack of testing valid or do the ships stand up okay?..

I can't honestly say - I never did buy the supplement. I bought and played ACTA:NA but the FFS kept on being bumped up the release schedule by ACTA:SF, so by the time it came out, interest was waning a bit, and I never got it. To my mind, the time spent putting a flawed product like ACTA:SF out could've been better spent on maintaining ACTA:NA. Don't forget, it took 3-4 versions of ACTA:B5 to get it right, ACTA:NA needed a bit more time to develop with feedback from players.

The ships stand up fine. FFS is really good product that expands the game from 4 samey fleets into a broad range of ships and rules.

As a playtester I can certainly say it was tested. I'm not saying there are aren't over and under-powered ships, but generally it is pretty darn good.

ACTA:SF is the odd one out here. B5:ACTA doesn't modify the roll to hit based on range either. At the sort of ranges involved in space combat, you're not going to hit anything unless you have a weapons lock, and if your weapons are locked onto the target then range is no longer an issue. What can stop you getting a weapons lock is stealth, and that is modified by range.

Those, however, are in B5. But the Heracles is supposed to be an up-armoured version of the Vladimir, and that has hull 5, so the only way the Heracles can earn the designation "armoured cruiser" is to have better armour, i.e. hull 6. It is a bit odd that the dreadnoughts in NA don't have hull 6 as well.
