Mongoose
Hey guys.
Just recently been getting back into ACTA (played a little first ed., but with a play group of 2 it didn't last long.) and I've been nosing around the forums which has given rise to a few questions for me.

1. Now I haven't been able to lay my mucky paws on a fleet book yet, and I've always been a fan of the 'lesser' races of B5. I've noticed a fair amount of people play with fleets consisting of one League race, but no-one seems to be using mixed-race League fleets. Is this no longer possible? Is there some other reason people aren't using them?

2. There's a mongoose ACTA Campaign weekend in January right? Me and mine have been thinking about attending. How big do these tend to be? Are new/realtively inexperienced players welcome, or are they the province of the deadly serious, veteran tabletop admiral alone? How easy is the venue to find, and when abouts will we hear more information about it?

Oh, and is it just me, or is Ramming Speed not the most enjoyable special action t's possible to carry out? I've yet to see someone not crack a smile while announcing it.

1) Yes, mixed league is still possible. There's no reason not to use them. It's just that people like to give their fleets character, by sticking to one race (and keep the initiative: mixed league always have 0 or lower).

2) Yes there is one, there has never been a 2-day event before (AFAIK?) but the one-day ones tend to be about 20 players. All welcome, some people take it a bit too seiously but if you just ignore them you can have fun.

Yes Ramming Speed is great, especially when you do it with Drazi and put on a Klingon accent

of course with a mixed league fleet, you can cover many of the shortcomings a single fleet would have.

Thanks guys!
That certainly helps me out. I can definitely understand the desire to play one league race, but I'm terribly indecisive, if I was restricted to one I'd never manage to start a fleet. Now I can happily toodle along with a mess of various ships.

Any recommendations of league ships I should really be paying attention to?

All kinds. Skirmish and Patrol Drazi ships make for great flankers and hunters, Brakiri and the Abbai Jucaya make for great brawlers and line ships. Take some Gaim ships for hordes of fighters and breaching pod fun. Most of the Vree fleet is excellent for long range support and working the rear of an enemy force.

For individual ships.

Abbai
Jucaya, Bimith

Vree
Xeel, Varrl, Xill, Xixx, Z'Takk, T'zymms

Brakiri
Kaliva, Halik, Cidikar, Corumai, Tashkat

Drazi
Pretty much raid and below.

Here's some fuel to throw on the fire... I do not like the Abbai due to the -2 on their initiative. Since the League is locked at 0 max and you take the lowest intiative. Since the Brakiri already hae some decent front line ships.

Theoretically speaking, the Drazi and Vree seem to have great flanking ships, for their high number of AD and maneuverability. If I field one of those, I might as well ignore the other... They serve the same role. I also like the Gaim's Skrunnka for the hull 6 and interceptors (the beams on every arc doesn't hurt either).

So, what does this mean? Well, since I really like the Vree ships, I'll pick up a ton of those. That will be my flanking forces. I might also field some of the Brakiri Avioki (variant) ships for taking a punch and controling my battleline. Finally, for the anti-fighter support and long range weapons, I'll groan and pick up some Gaim queens.
