My Review of Supplement 10: Merchants and Cruisers

Thanks, yep Foss, but Peter Elson more my inspiration.

Really don't mind who see it the more the merrier!
(even Marc Miller's had a peak)

Co-Author of what ? If you don't mind me asking.

One of my fellow co-authors in Spinward Encounters, Ms Bonni Feltz. she and her gaming group were also RichardP's & I playtest group for a lot of our work.

In spite pf the phallic and simplistic line-drawing deckplans, I did go out and get this pdf form the other day.

Why?

I have been a close friend of Traveller Artist Bryan Gibson since 1982, and while he illustrates for the game seldom any more, I do own original pieces by him. In the artwork I saw displayed on theseboards by Middenface, alias Mr Ian Stead, I mayhaps can be biased, but I wished to see more of it.

If you've followed his link folks, then the work in Merchant & Cruisers is worth the price.

Had he been the sole illustrator within, the book would have gotten a higher rating, from myself included.

That is all gentlemen,
You have the helm Mister Stead....

Thanks your making me blush! ;)

I've done a few more plans since that book..... some are in Starports and some will appear somewhere else.....

I'd really like to do a single ship book.... plans are afoot.

I have Starports (in pdf format) and noted your work there sir as well. I hope to see some of it in Aliens: Zhodani in the very near future...(fingers crossed).

Concur with you, a single ship's book would be a fantastic edition (and "traditional", if I may use the Vilani sense of the word) to Mongoose's efforts for the game settings.

Make you blush?

My apologies if this caused discomfort, Mssr Stead, but it was intended as just praise for excellent workmanship.

One I did for one of Andrew's designs.

Thanks, I enjoyed doing those ships, so nice when I've got good accurate specs to hand. I've put colour versions of the Dregs and the Recovery ships up on the Blog.

There is something coming... say no more...

Something me and a fellow member of the board are doing... slipped into a bit of a hiatus for the moment. Buts its getting there. I actually fancy revisiting the Khoghue (or Kog as I call her) maybe make a Corsair version..

Oh no, nothing so bad, I guess I don't have faith in my abilities sometimes, and I guess I get shocked when people like it... stupid I know, but there you go. I have odd turns of phrase sometimes...

That would be extra zarky!

(If you have a "Kog" how about a "Khaeravel"?)

(groans at obvious pun)

in that case, does he have a Ghaelleanh, or a Ghaelleaeshe?

(Nice one!)

Only in Logaksu territory. The Gvegh still mostly use the Gnaeugh and Khaeraagh.

(yep, he did again!)

Ah, in Logaksu territory; so those cannot be confused with the versatile Khnaerrh-class Far Trader, or the Bhaerghe-class bulk freighters of the Suedzekh...

Khnaerrh-class Far Trader? Viking Vargrs, for the win! I concede the match..

Yes, the Vikings vis-a-vis the Vargr are an appropriate match. Many a Vargr merchant where they were strong and the client weak took advantage; and where the client was stronger, conducted trade instead...

Niiiiiiiiice stealth scout!

I don't know if you do requests, but there is an NPC-band of such Vargr-traders/Corsairs in my campaigns that wends its way down from the Federation of Rukh in Gvvurdon to the Zhodani Borders to trade, and sometimes *visits* the non-aligned and Imperial worlds in the coreward edges of Jewell, Regina, & Aramis subsectors.

They are led by a Suedzekh (red-furred) wily Corsair/ Trader named Montezgvaegh Suedvhaegh, who commands an 800dton Vargr Frigate (he does have a 'commission' from the Rukh as a paramilitary/ privateer vs the Rukh's enemies)--but instead of a pair of Vargr 40dton heavy Ftrs, he packs 4 of the 20dton Strike Ftrs; in his small 'flotilla', two of his littermate siblings (sisters) command a pair of 200dton Vargr Ngusku Armed Traders; His 'uncle', Gharraekh '9-claws' commands a Koghue Armed Junk ship; Montezgvaegh's neice and one nephew (on from each of his littermate sibs) command a pair of Ueknou-class 400dton Corsairs.

The freighters are generally seen escorted by the frigate; the junk-ship is usually one-jump behind them. while the two corsair vessels prowl. When Montezgvaegh makes a show of force, he summons the entire band.

Thus far the players (Humans with a pair of Vargr aboard) have encountered only the first trio with the screen of fighters as they left port for the jump point.

Montezgvaegh's color scheme is black/ red/ orange/ yellow--heavy on the red. The Sibs, Rahaerkha & Naerou use black/ white/ purple/ green in their schemes; Ghaerrekh's vessel is a motley of colors, signifying his trade visually to any who encounter his ship 'Bone-Collector'; the nephew & neice tend to follow Montezgvaegh's scheme, save the neice uses orange as her primary color; the nephew uses black as his.

Dunno if that's a tall order or not, but while we were on the topic of Vargr-Vikings, thought I'd share an in-game example.

Nice work. Not really all that Vargr-y, but nice regardless.

Fair point and thanks, well I figure that with some Vargr they just don't follow the usual Vargr look, perhaps it was built that way so it would sell better with the humans ;) , it kind of resemble a Leopard Drop Ship from Battletech though...
