My first game of World atWar

lastbesthope

Mongoose
Well I visited Mongoose HQ yesterday to get my hand in at the game so I can demo it at Mongoose Hall.

I played Brit Commandos against Matt's Germans.

Jolly good game with some interesting twists of fate, Matt's dice rolling was abominable, but my tanks were useless, good fun dropping bombs from my aircraft though.

Top sound bites from the game:

Matt's raspberry noises and hand gestures when he remembered about the stealthy rule meaning he couldn't draw LOS to my commandos hiding in cover from more than 20" away

Me going "What do you mean my AT weaponry is only D6+3, where's the D10 gone?"

Good fun, looking forward to playing it again.

Always good to hear that the game works.
You also remebered to Ambush Matt, or?

Commandos are really expensive and if you are not using all their rules to the max you are in trouble.
So next time try to Ambush his tanks from behind with your PIAT...

No, he missed that one, but it was his first game. Still, my snipers were popping up from various ruins :)

I also forgot to apply my save binus for being in cover, which is where I spent most of the game.

It was nice to remind Matt of the Stealthy rule he had written though :P

I'm jealous. I wanna play too...

I picked up a pretty Sturmtiger yesterday, and found a Maus on sale. It was tough not grabbing that while I saw it.

Good choice - while the Sturmtiger is not in the main rulebook (there really weren't very many in the war!), I have just written up an article featuring it for the next S&P!

ah, the torture of waiting... you're not making this any easier!

LBH had a Typhoon.

Are the rules for air units similar to what we have seen in the past?

More comprehensive. As an example, because we intended the Air rules to fit, say, Modern Combat and SST, there are things in there that can be used for WWII that we otherwise might not have included.

For example, if you want to play a game whereby a bunch of troops arrive by glider, all the rules you need are already there. By the same token, we are looking at a scenario for S&P where a small force is trying to get to a Dakota waiting to take off while pursued - again, all the rules needed to run this type of scenario are already in there, and we just need to have a look at victory conditions.

We are collecting some models and terrain together at the moment (and you might just see this at Mongoose Hall), and are putting together a 'Dambusters' game - again, all the rules needed to run this sort of battle are included, and we just need to work out stats for Lancasters and bouncing bombs (and perhaps some serious AAA).

The Air Phase follows the same basic procedures as the original SST, but it has been thoroughly shaken down and revised. It is much more flexible than before, and wait until you see what you can do in Modern Combat :)

Are the air rules part of the core rules? or are they an extension that could be modified under the OGL?
