MRQ CONAN! Its Alive!

Try to do something with your knowledge of Conan stories getting "public domain", and expect to find a lot of lawyers at your heels, and paing a lot of money for copyright, and trademark violation.

Get it in your head:
The first Conan story was published just 2 years after the very first Mickey Mouse cartoon. And Disney will manage to move the copyright/public domain threat from their corporate identity figure as they can. And with it everything else that may fall into public domain around the same time.

At the moment Mickey Mouse falls into public domain after 95 years after it was produced (which makes it 2023). For Conan that means 2025.

If you want to wait that long you might get lucky and get your MRQ Conan. Maybe not...

Something else:
Conan becoming public domain means the stories become public domain, not the name which is still a Trademark.

For more informations of this google "Conan public domain".

Well, 'get this in your head'. In the U.K., its not 95 years, its 70. So that makes it the year 2000, doesnt it?

Maybe it is 70 in the UK.
I think that the copyright and trademark holders don´t care about UK law, but will use international laws.

Think about this:
If the state of Grand Fenwick had only a copyright of 50 years, and would have started to make Mickey Mouse cartoons and comics in 1979, what do you think: would the fact that Grand Fenwick has only a 50 year copyright make it unassailable for US lawyers defending Disneys Trademark?

For Conan:
MAYBE it could work if Mongoose would make these Conan books ONLY available in the UK. But i doubt that this would work either.

Conan is not an UK figure. Conan was created by an american author, and the copyright is held by some people in norway (?) or so.

Copyright and Trademark is a very complicated thing... even more so if you aim to use it for an international market.

Since when is US law international law ? In Europe, copyrights last for 70 years after the author's death..

And can Mongoose afford high-price court case with CPI about this?

oooh! that one is nearly too good to pass up!
(media licencing, territorial sovereignty, ingoring UN laws and edicts to suit)
.
.
.
in fact US law is ANTI- international law (extreme rendition, unreasonable detainment, a near immunity from extradition, immunity from prosecution by a foreign state for serving US soldiers etc)

i could go on...
but its a bit of a thread hijack. Would like to make it clear that I have a few US friends and find americans, like most people, lovely and reasonable.. just not fond of their govt.

hey, I live in the US, and I'm not fond of my government. :x

We could totally set up a Conan smuggling ring. I can see it now, longships gliding silently in the night to a clandestine meeting on the coast of Maine. Arr! It's a pirate's life for me!
