Yes, the gist of 1e appears to be covered in 2e, although Dilettante and Cosmopolite were great names to add to the character sheet, and those names have been dropped, and the result is marginally duller, impact-wise and inspiration-wise.
The only "problem" I see with 2e careers is that there are now so many skills, including specialisations, that it is very difficult build a balanced set of characters, with good general "adventuring" skills, and several possibly useful "niche" skills.
Yes, the universe is vast, and players may need to know that they are small and insignificant, in terms of knowing everything about it, but I can't help think the game mechanic could be slightly more generous with career skills acquisition.
To second that, Pre-career education only gives a paltry number of skills, over four years, compared to real-life equivalents.
