Mongoose 2300AD Progress Report

I don't see how this can be called Traveller at all. IMO its completely different game and should be in its own forum. It will get extremely confusing if things about this game are being discussed alongside Traveller stuff here.

But isn't this just a different setting, now that it uses the Mongoose Traveller rules? I believe all the RQ/Legend settings get discussed in the RQ forum. Since I'm not a particular fan of the OTU, I'm keen for Traveller to diversify in the same way.

Well aware of the flammability of the issue I say it anyway... The system cannot possibly be why people find Traveller agreeable. Or? I find it not so nice and while it carries some sort of nostalgic fondness, I still find it mostly suboptimal. However, I do enjoy the 2300 setting lots and lots. How many settings use the mongoose (or indeed any other) Traveller rule sets? Unless this is a GURPS-like franchise with loads of highly diverse settings using the named system, I would disagree with calling this Traveller-whatever.

This is not a complete list, but here is what I know of the Settings that use the MGT (or Traveller) rules:

OTU - Default Traveller in all it's variations
Judge Dredd - Mongoose
Strontium Dog - Mongoose
Babylon 5 - Mongoose - Not active
Twilight Sector - Terra/Sol Games
Netherell - Terra/Sol Games - Fantasy setting within Twilight Sector
Reign of Discordia - Reality Deviant Publications (Flaming Cobra) - Not sure if this is active

Upcoming Settings:
2300AD - Mongoose
Star Fleet - Mongoose
Outer Veil - Spica

These are just the settings that I personally own/know about. There are a LOT of personal settings that use variations of the Traveller rules.

There are probably more, I apologize if I left off your setting!

As a gamer nobody I presume that these are all fine and dandy applications of the rule set. However, I can't help but wonder how much any of these added settings would benefit from the Traveller-prefix? I would certainly survive including Traveller in the 2300 setting name, but I fail to see the need to do so, especially if it causes confusion. There was probably a good reason to why they remove it in the first place.

Yes, the game was originally called Traveller: 2300 but was renamed because people confused it with Traveller.

I agree it needn't be called Traveller 2300, but don't see that it should necessarily get its own forum. On the other hand I also don't care either way.

And the reason that it was a problem at the time was because it was neither the standard Traveller setting of the time, nor was it the Traveller system of the time (I was there; I remember the outcry). Since the forthcoming incarnation will be using the Traveller system of the (forthcoming) time, it is (IMO) perfectly reasonable to revert to the original Traveller: 2300 name.

Having been there too, I completely agree that calling it Traveller 2300AD is completely fine. Back then it was not the Traveller system combined with the 2300AD setting, so only 2300AD made more sense. Today, it is the Traveller system combined with 2300AD setting so this time around Traveller 2300AD makes complete sense.

What are the other options? Mongoose Traveller 2300AD? MongTrav 2300AD?, Mongoose 2300AD? Mongoose is the company, not the rules system. Mongoose has published books under other systems, so shortening to just Mongoose leaves out a key component. Mongoose Traveller 2300AD is perhaps the best description, but a mouthful. Currently we say MongTrav or just Traveller for the current rules system that includes a default setting. Trav 2300AD is completely descriptive in my opinion - the current rules plus the setting, plus Traveller 2300AD brings back some nostalgia.

For comparison, what have we been calling the Mongoose Traveller Hammer's Slammers in short hand here? I don't know.

MGTMMCCC

OR MGT2.3K

No mixing SI and Latin thank you ;)

LBH

Me trying to remember the abbreviation would lead to such things as MGMXYZCC.

MT2300AD or just MT2300? Old versions would thus be T2300 (original release) or 2300 (second release). The AD necessary or not?

I call it MgT:2300, myself...

Yeah I guess MT2300 might get confusing because many of us are used to MT = MegaTraveller and MgT or MGT = Mongoose Traveller.

MGT2300 would be quick to type for me (no colon and less shift-key presses).

Oh, me too. Minis of 2300AD ships would absolutely make my day. I would like to work on an updated Star Cruiser, only, you know, fun. I have some ideas in that direction, maybe explore them next year or so.

For fun of course..... The FDR and Kennedy
