[Mongoose 1st Ed] 10 dTon interplanetary sloop

MarcusIII

Cosmic Mongoose
I designed this to showcase to my players different types of small craft other than what is in the main rule books. The one here is something one might own as a company exec in a system where there are multiple inhabited planets and/or an asteroid belt where the company has a presence. Or simply a wealthy person.

Small craft relaxed the 1 DTon minimum fuel limit. This tiny craft probably needs around than 1/3 DTon (0.32 if my maths is correct). The space saved can be used for cargo or a bit more common space.

Thanks. I used the rules that were extant at the time. This design is something I made many years ago. I'll remember that in the future though! :)

I do like tiny ships (and personally suspect they are the ones players are most likely to have).

If I went for sub-100 Dton jump ships I'd just apply the same formula (i.e. n% of hull + 5 DTon) and retain the 10 DTon minimum*. This makes them less efficient but the only change from the default rules is removing the 100 DTon arbitrary limit.

A 50 Dton Jump shuttle would need a 10 Dton J-Drive (and not have a lot of space for anything else), but once you take off the 5DTon the remaining 5 DTon represents 10% of the Hull meaning J-4 so really long jumping small craft makes a sort of sense. A 30 Dton jump boat could fit a J-6 drive as easily as J-1 :)

Well, technically CT Book 2 has that restriction as well. Only standard model drives available, and the smallest J-Drive is 10 tons.

Yes but that was changed by HG... to 2% of the hull displacement for a jump 1 drive. Since HG that restriction has been removed, until the return in MgT.

Obvious it was the original intent that a jump drive has five tonnes overhead, then two and a halvish percent of volume.

Minimum ten tonnes was by default, since engineering were off the shelf models.

The ten tonne minimum seems to be current edition, with customization the only permissible way to drop it to seven tonnes, with presumably three and a half tonne overhead.

HG rules also requires custom hulls, which are MUCH more expensive than standard ones. Book 2 construction is still usual for civilian ships in CT.

And HG construction does not CHANGE Book 2 standard component construction as such. It's an additional sequence that was introduced beside it. Mongoose 2e has continued the one-sequence approach that MegaTraveller and TNE went with... although Mongoose 1e used a basic one and a high guard one.

TNE had this to say "Important Note: The smallest jump drive possible, at any tech level, is 2 cubic meters in volume.", 2 cubic metres is one seventh of a displacement ton...
