Missing rear fire arc on an Avioki compared to a Kaliva.

Mongoose
Just wondered if anyone knew why a Kaliva and the Batrado have a 2 dice aft fire arc Graviton Pulsar and the Avioki does not.

I know the Kaliva is a more recent and more advanced ship (2260 as opposed to 2238) but the Avioki should have a very similar secondary weapons base and surely more so than on the Batrado?

Usually variations on the same hull give up some of their secondary armament (often too much!) for a slight change in their main guns. Same sort of thing happens with Sharlin variants.

Yeah, thats what I figured but I am looking around fairly desperatly for a reason to use the classic Avioki and not one of the varients.

The Kaliva has a heavier pulse load 6/6/6/2 as opposed to 10/4/4 and a main gun that fires every turn whie retaining a 4 dice slow loading beam.

The Batrado is just very cheap for a ship that big.

I WANT to use the Avioki but it just doesn't seem to make maths sense.

If you're saying the Batrado is cheap because it is Skirmish, then note that it is a typo that puts it at Skirmish level in the fleet list. If you look at the actual ship stats it shows as the correct level, Raid. Yeah its still fairly cheap for that many HP's but you lose out on weapons :)

Well it is hull 5, that makes a big difference. And the weapons are pretty pathetic compared to a lot of other Raid ships. So its a compromise really, more tank less gank.

Someones been playing too much EVE online ;)

Seriously though, as for reasons to take an Avioki over a Kaliva... well if your playing with in service dates you may not have the variants available but other than that there just isnt one. Kaliva ftw :P

The tourney Avioki on the otherhand was worth taking, why oh why did mongoose not change it for armageddon :-(

Matt certainly confimed that they were getting the heavy fighter from AOG days, but it's a new mold I think, hopefully they will get the Coroumi dreadnaugt as well, no idea what else to expect, but I would love to field the avioki as a front line warship, instead of always using a Kaliva

Hopefully every ship should be a viable choice with 2nd ed., not just a few main ones in each fleet.

I used to use a Kaliva much more than an Avioki but now i generally use Avioki's (might be because more people in my gaming group are picking up EA fleets so i need the beam more than the range

Do you find the beam effective against EA without AP or SAP? The 4 Dice on the Kaliva is usually about 2/3 as effective as the Avioki's and the lance can be used against ships down a few intercepters for SAP.

Against Hyperion/Nova fleets the Avioki's better. The extra 4AD of AP guns to the front are lethal enough against hull 5 or less ships, the 8AD of double damage beam is quite capable of destroying one of them outright (although I use them in pairs to make sure). Against Omegas the Kaliva's a much better bet, especially if you team it up with a Halik or somesuch to drain the interceptors.

against Omegas and Warlocks and the like then the usually worthless beam suddenly becomes useless as usually 2AD gets through of the Gravitic lance and only 2 dice usually gets intercepted. Whereas 8 dice of Beam (every other turn) should get at least 1 hit
and 1+ hits every other turn is better than 0 hits (after interceptors) every turn
