Missiles, Torpedoes, & initiative

Not sure,

You're supposed to get a chance for point defence, so I'd guess they attack at the end of the attack step,

Movement I'm less clear on, but I'm not sure it matters (the only interaction is with EW until they get to their target IIRC). I guess last might be simplest and most consistent answer given the above?

So there's a partial answer,

By default, missiles do not move separately. The missiles are fire-and-forget so they figure that out themselves.

I let them attack on the launching ship's initiative, just a few rounds later, but that is not clearly stated in the rules.

So if I launch missiles on round 1 at a target at Very Long range, the missiles will attack on my initiative on round 5 (regardless of what the range is then).

Revisiting this because I'm trying to do vectors and actual ranges, and I'm just now getting back to this. When moving on a map and not using range bands, should a missile move in the attack phase or the movement phase? I am also of the mind that a missile will have the same vector as the launching platform at the time of launch. This is why I was asking about initiative. I was going to go with missile thrust + gunner skill + computer program DMs. Thoughts?

If I were to move missiles around separately (which I am much too lazy for) I would go for as simple and fast as possible, to speed up combat.

Missiles should certainly start with the launching ship's vector.

I would let the missiles move in the attack phase, with the first move when they are launched. If a missile intercepts a spacecraft I would roll up the hit immediately. I would not bother with a separate initiative for each missile, but let them move and attack on the launching ship's initiative. But that is just my lazy opinion.

Going by modern launchers, it doesn't matter which direction missiles are pointed at, they can immediately change direction after launch.

It may make a difference in some settings,

e.g.: In the honourverse missiles are given some initial impetus from the mass-driver spitting them out,

But in other settings this is not going to be a factor,

Considering the speed the ships are supposed to be going, you probably would want the ordnance clear; I believe they used mass drivers.

Speaking of which, would you really want to be in a fourteen cubic metre area with a rocket engine going right off next to you?

Who says they use rockets once gravitic drives are developed?

Cost accountants; they may be twice as big, but rocket engines are ten times cheaper, especially considering their kamikaze nature.

Stealthed cruise missile probably would have grav drives.
