minbari

I feel kinda daft, but I have to point out that the Earth-Minbari War was over well before the Warlock went into service...

I was mostly referring to the Earth-Minbari war because of the tactics that were displayed by the desperate Earthers- that of ramming. I was watching "In the Beginning" and they showed one scene where a Nova (iirc) rammed into the side of a Sharlin, taking out both ships.

I'll take the advice of not doing demos of early EA againt Minbari. :D

It looks like the best way to beat Minbari is to get into knife-fighting range from what I'm learning. With Minbari being "boneheads" maybe I'll trade the knife for a hammer.

Yes. Very cine-dramatic. I always questioned just how it was that the EA got that close.

You wouldn't be suffering from Minbari war syndrome would you? ;>

Maybe this was the Minbari Captain's train of thoughts:

Wanna get closer? Be my guest, you still wont lock into anything...
(10 seconds later)
What are you doing? HEY!!! WHAT THE F*** ARE YOU DOING??!!

Yeah, meet the Earthers. They don't think outside of the box, they just push your face onto a sharp corner of it.

When I was very young and reading about the Japanese Kamikaze pilots in WW2, I thought "that's insane!"

Many years later, I think that I came to understand the frame of mind of those fighting a "total war." When push came to shove, they literally "gave it 100%."

JMS sure seems to weave this throughout B5. Examples are Sinclair's "I'm going to take you bastards with me", which ironically he does but against the Shadows 1000 years in the past, lol , the aforementioned desparate early EA, Captain Hiroshi and the EAS Churchill defending Babylon 5 (just a bit cheesy I thought to have a Japanese Captain- ohh how JMS dishes out the irony ) and the starship Victory's valiant end. I even think there were a few Anla'Shok White Stars that did the trick in a few fights. In that case they might have been commanded by Earth-born Rangers or just maybe the Minbari Rangers were learning our bad habits. You know the saying- "Minbari see, Minbari do".

And yes, there is a difference between planning a suicide attack and "taking out" additional enemy forces if you knew you were dying anyway. Or is there a difference? In Imperial Japan's case, it was a desparate act to save their nation.

Oh yeah. The ultimate kamikaze. Sheridan, on the planet, using a White Star with a preprogrammed course with full burn and packing a couple of nukes. Go, Sheridan!

Not quite sure I'd go as far as to call him a kamikaze... a man with a plan, yep.

I'm not sure I call jumping off a cliff in the vague hope that you'll be saved by an all-knowing, exceedingly irritating, immortal super-being at the last moment (I mean what are the chances?) counts as a plan...

I have a regular EA opponent and his best game came from using a Pulse Omega flanked by a couple of Nova Dreadnoughts and just plowed them full speed into my formation.

Crippled my Sharlin with that move. :x It was down to 2 damage points remaining and only managed to escape because a nearby Torotha had conveniently opened a jump point for it limp through.

So yes, lots of close range ships and smash the boneheads with weight of dice. Get some Scouts and plenty of fighters too. You can usually get the stealth down to 3+ or even 2+ once you get up close. Broadside ships can often fire from multiple arcs and if you line it up right you may even be able to avoid the front neutron lasers to boot.

well, the plan, being that he did not know exactly what the Shadows had in mind for him. The nukes on the White Star being a back up (if I'm going down, so are you). I never got the impression that using the nukes was his primary plan.

I dunno, he already had his suspicions about Anna. He wanted to know what the Shadows were up to but I think he realised it was unlikely they were going to offer the sort of deal he would accept.

He told Delenn that he would come back if he could. But, knowing his enemy he probably though it unlikely. So, the Screw Em Nuke Em option.

Yeah, G'Kar even mentioned that the nukes went missing just minutes before that scene where Sheridan jumps into the pit. Also, the biological scans came back that showed that Anna was plugged into a shadow ship before being sent to B5. Finally, there was a flash-back to Kosh's words about going to Zha-hadum would be fatal without Kosh's help.

So, I personally think that Sheridan left, thinking he was going to die or never come back "the same person". The WS was just an insurance plan to make certain the former, rather than the later.

Fine line between bravery and desperation...

BTW BuShips, is that the HMS Hood as your user avatar?

Yuppers, it's the Hood, seconds from the fatal hit. :D

Yeah, formation with Prince of Wales was the main clue.. Too bad, such a wonderful looking ship.

Good thing the Minbari ships are not only beautiful. I guess the Sharlins are the truly ideal battleruisers aren't they?
