Chern, I think this idea has a lot of merit--in most aspects.
I like the idea that all turns are at 45, and that eahc ship gets a stat indicating how far it can move--I think this woudl be an excellent way to simulate actual ship movement.
Madatory drift with penalites to hit rolls is also a vast improvement over what we have now--it might mean that that crit alone could lead to removing the vessel from play--it slids off the table.
I do not particularily liekt eh idea of an agile trait--if a ship is that agile its space between movement should be adjusted, not given a special trait.
I don't think a driftign ship shoudl be forbidden all SA's--defeinitley some like CAF, Come about and All stop--the ship has lost control of its engines, but I don't see why it cann't close blast doors or send all hads to the deck?
Finally, although you don't discuss it, what I don't undertand is why a ship cann't fire on a turn it does all stop and pivit? (sp?) It has taken its engines off line and is now using that power to turn itelf oon a dime--as has been ponted out manouvering thusters are different that main engines.
Mu solution to All stop and Pivit woudl be to allow the ship to fire but permit it only up to a 90 deg (maybe 135) turn. Basically allow it to function normally, but keep teh ship form beign able to spin liek a top and becoem a giant stationary gun turrnet.
